    UN Truce Suprvision Organization
    On 29 May 1948 , the Security Council, called for a cessation of hostilities in Palestine and decided that the truce should be supervised by the UN Mediator. In the Middle East , groups of UNTSO military observers are today attached to the peacekeeping forces in the area.
  • UN Military OBSERVER group in India and Pakistan

    UN Military OBSERVER group in India and Pakistan
    The first group of United Nations military observers arrived in the mission area on 24 January of 1949 to supervise the ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

    UNMOGIP has remained in the area to observe developments pertaining to the strict observance of the ceasefire of 17 December 1971.

    UNEF I was established to secure and supervise the cessation of hostilities, including the withdrawal of the armed forces of France, Israel and the United Kingdom from Egyptian territory and, after the withdrawal, to serve as a buffer between the Egyptian and Israeli forces

    UNOGIL was established to ensure that there was no illegal infiltration of personnel or supply of arms or other materiel across the Lebanese borders. After the conflict had been settled, tensions eased and UNOGIL was withdrawn.
  • UN Operations in the Congo

    UN Operations in the Congo

    ONUC was established in July 1960 to ensure the withdrawal of Belgian forces, to assist the Government in maintaining law and order and to provide technical assistance. The function of ONUC was subsequently modified to include maintaining the territorial integrity and political independence of the Congo, preventing the occurrence of civil war and securing the removal of all foreign military.

    UNYOM was established in July 1963 to observe and certify the implementation of the disengagement agreement between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Republic. The mandate of UNYOM ended on 4 September 1964.

    UNEF II was established in October 1973 to supervise the ceasefire between Egyptian and Israeli forces and, following the conclusion of the agreements of 18 January 1974 and 4 September 1975.

    From early March 1974, the situation in the Israel-Syria sector became increasingly unstable, and firing intensified.
    ince then, UNDOF has remained in the area to maintain the ceasefire between the Israeli and Syrian forces and to supervise the implementation of the disengagement agreement.

    UNIIMOG was established in August 1988
    UNIIMOG was terminated in February 1991after Iran and Iraq had withdrawn fully their forces to the internationally recognized boundaries.

  • UN Iraq - Kuwait Observation Mission

    UN Iraq - Kuwait Observation Mission
    UNIKOM was established in April 1991 following the forced withdrawal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait. Its task was to monitor the demilitarized zone along the Iraq-Kuwait border, deter border violations and report on any hostile action. The mandate of the Mission was completed on 6 October 2003.

    Monitor the crossing of military personnel, equipment, supplies and weapons over specified international borders.
    Strength: 6,581 troops, 194 military observers and 296 civilian police; they were supported by international and locally recruited civilian staff.
  • UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea

    UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea
    In June 2000, after two years of fighting in a border dispute, Ethiopia and Eritrea signed a cessation of hostilities agreement following proximity talks led by Algeria and the Organization of African Unity.
    On 30 July 2008, the Security Council terminated the mandate of UNMEE with effect from the following day.

    They embarked on the path of independence in 1999 and marks the departure of UN peacekeepers from Timor-Leste after 13 years.
