  • Introduction

    In the first chapter, there are some descriptions about Ponyboy's friends. We can know a few main characters, their appearance and personalities. Another important thing is the relationship between them.
  • Ponybot gets jumped wailing home from the movies.

    Ponyboy gets jumped by a few Socs because they want to cut down Ponyboy's hair. It is important part of beginning of whole book, because Ponyboy's hair can be a symbol of a number of Greasers. Socs want to cut down his hair which means Socs tend to beat Greasers, and this event shows how bad the relationship between Socs and Greasers exists.
    We also can realize the setting of the books, the story happens in these two groups.
  • Conversation between Cherry and Ponyboy.

    We can know the difference between these two groups through this conversation, Not only does money separate these two groups, the biggest difference between them is their personalities. Socs are sophisticated, cool to the point of not feeling anything, while Greasers are emotional, they have hot heart.
    Ponyboy can represent Greasers as a protagonist, while Socs are antagonist in this novel.
  • Darry hits Ponyboy.

    This event is also a important part of books, because if Darry did not hit Ponyboy, Ponyboy would not get jumped in the park, and antyhing would not happen. In other words, this event is an incident that touches off a war.
  • Jonny and Ponyboy get jumped by five Socs at the park.

    This events is start of everything. Johnny kills Bob who is a number of Socs, so that there is a bigger contradiction between them.
  • Johnny and Ponyboy head to Windrixville to hide in a church from the police.

    They do not want to be caught into jail, so they hide into church. They spend prosaic and dull seven days, Johnny and Ponyboy are hungry, cold, and fear during these days. Ponyboy loses his hair which can represent a number of greasers in order to avoid policemen to find them.
  • Ponyboy and Johnny cut hair.

    Ponyboy is unwilling to cut and bleach hir hair, but he has to do this because they have to avoid being caught by policemen. It is referred that Ponyboy gets jumped by some Socs because they want to cut Ponyboy's hair in the previous chapter.
    Ponyboy's hair has special meaning for him, and he is proud of his hair because his hair can a symbol of being a number of Greasers, so he does not want to lose his hair, lose his symbol.
  • They read a poem written by Robert Frost.

    "Nothing gold can stay."
    It is key point of this event which means time flies and everything change quickly, nothing can be kept forever. Do not change yourself no matter how fast time goes by, and cherish everything.
  • The church gets set on fire and Johnny and Ponyboy run in to save some little kids, and then Dally runs in after to save Johnny.

    Johnny and Ponyboy rush into the church which gets set on fire without any hesitation to save children who are trapped in the church. They are emotional, and care about other people; they possess warm heart. I think they are very brave.
  • Johnny gets severe hurt, and they go to the hospital.

    When Johnny rush into the church to save children, he gets really severe hurt. This event show us that Johnny can sacrifice himself in order to other peole lives who is unfamiliar with him. we can know that Johnny has sympathy and he is emotional.
  • Darry crys for Ponyboy

    Ponyboy always thinks that Darry does not understand and love him, because Darry treats him too strict. Ponyboy thinks that Darry has a cool heart, and does not care about anything include him, however Ponyboy sees his brother crying for him, he starts to realize that Darry really cares about him in a strict way.
  • The conversation between Ponyboy and Randy.

    Randy is a number of Socs, while Ponyboy is a number of Greasers. There is a conversation occurs between them. There is no doubt that this is conversation is different and meaningful, and this conversation just occurs between individuals, not groups. Ponyboy realizes that not everyone in
    Socs is cool, and they also have emotion. They are not bad as they image each other.
  • Rumble

    A big fight occurs between Greasers and Socs, and they both fight for their own honor. Greasers want to win this fight to improve they are stronger than Socs, and they are not weak anymore. This event is also a climax of this whole novel.
  • Johnny's last words.

    "stay gold." This is Johnny's last words. Johnny wishes Ponyboy can keep himself who has a warm heart and emotion, and cares about other people.
  • Johnny dies.

    Johnny plays a very important role of Greasers, because Johnny can bring positive energy to other people. Johnny needs this team, and meanwhile this group also need Johnny. Johnny is weaker and smaller, so other people want to protect him, and other Greasers also feel they are needed, Johnny can balance this Group.
  • Dally talks to Ponyboy

    Dally expresses If Johnny could be as smart and tough as Dally, he would not rush into the church and get severe hurt. "Smart and tough." means "cool heart and don't care anything."
  • Dally's dead

    Dally robs the grocery and he points a gun at policemen, so he is shot by a policeman and dead.
    "Dally always gets what he wants." As can be known from this sentence, Dally wants to die, and this time he also gets this result. He is in deep despair after Johnny is gone because he misses and loves Johnny so much. Johnny is Dally's spiritual support. Johnny is gone means that Dally's spiritual support vanishes, so he tends to die with Johnny.
  • Nobody writes editorials praising Dally.

    This event show the main theme of this novel to readers. Dally gets hurt due to he rush into the church to save children; he cares and looks after his friends very well. Dally might be a hero in his friends' mind; however, nobody writes editorials praising him. This event reflects the indifference of this society; people who live in a good situation might not care about people who like Greasers.
  • Sodapop receives his letter to Sandy back and unopened, then he cannot stand Darry and Ponyboy bickering and run out.

    Sodapop finally expresses his feeling about arguments happen between Darry and Ponyboy. For a long time, Sodapop acts a middleman. He cannot stand any side, because he loves them both. Now, his is tired about that; he wish Darry and Ponyboy can stop arguing with each other. He also wishes that they can keep close relationship and understand each other.
  • Ponyboy stays in bed, Randy visits him.

    Ponyboy argues with Randy because Ponyboy doesn't admit that Johnnoy kills Bob. Personally, I think that Ponyboy thinks the reason Johnny kills Bob is him, so he think it is his fault,
  • They all go to court and Ponyboy is allowed to stay with Darry.

    Greasers and Socs go to court, they are asked about Bob's dead; however, Ponyboy is rarely asked though he is a witness. Other greasers are asked some questions which do not connect this case. We can know that Greasers are not downplayed by this society.
  • Ponyboy starts to write a story.

    Ponyboy is going to fail his test, so his teacher asks him to write a story. Ponyboy decides to write down the story about Greasers and Socs.
