    By using flashbacks, the author is reinforcing that theme of not appreciating what we have in the present. It's a way of showing how the characters have regret and look back on the past and wish they could do things over. I think he uses flashbacks to show the reader that they should value what they have and live the way they want the first time so they don't regret it later.

    I don't think the play wouldn't have that same effect on the reader because it doesn't have the same sense of wish fullness for the past. It wouldn't efficiently showcase the reader the theme of regretting the past for not appreciating it.
