Our History: Migration to Australia

  • The Chinese Goldrush 1788-1900

    Immagrants came to Australia to look for gold. 24 thousand migrants were looking for gold. The European migrants were jealous of the Chinese because they were finding lots of gold but the Europeans weren't so the Europeans started killing the chinese miners.
    The government didn't like the the Asians so they had to pay high taxes.

  • Migrants from Italy 1951-1968

    In 1951-1968 42000 migrants from Italy arrived is Australia and they were all self funded. The Italians That migrated from Italy brought over some new things that the Aussies didn't have like Cafe's and restruants (pizza and pasta, coffees-cappachinos and expressos). They also brang some new farming facilities aswell like sheep, cattle, vineyards (wine) and sugar cane.
  • Immagrants from South East Asia

    Australian Imigration Policy became more open to non european migration from around the mid 1960's onwards, but non european migrants did not really start to arrive in large numbers until the early 1970's.There was a large influx of immagrants from South East Asia during the 1970's (some arriving in boats) a response to upheavles and unrest taking place in countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos at this time. The 1970's and 1980's was also time when multiculturalism became a strong focus.
  • White Australian Policy Abolished 1945-1990

    In the mid 1970's "The White Australian Policy" abolished and Australian government was letting refugee's into Australia.
    Australia has become the most diverese nation.
  • 10 pound poms 1945-1990

    The migrants could come to Australia for 10 pounds. This was called "The 10 Pound Poms Shceme." It was also called "Populate or Perish".
    The government still didn't want Asians so they only looked and let people in that had blonde hair and blue eyes into Australia.
  • Multiculturalism

    Australia is one of the most multicultural nations in the world. Migrants have come here in seach of a better life and in doing so have fundamentally shaped our culture and our economy.
