    On August 4th, 1861 Oscar James Owen arrived at Marietta Georgia on Thursday and fell asleep around 1 O’Clock awaked at 4 in the morning. He spent friday in drilling and at 12 O’clock he was called for guard duty until 2 O’clock. On Saturday he drilled in the morning and after dinner he went to the point and had his picture taken.

    Soldiers are being admitted to service
    On this date in history soldiers were taking the oath to join the army. Some joined and others just couldn't do it so they had to leave. Also some people were rejected as they didn't fit the needed requirements for the military. So they were sent back home. This is when Oscar and many other became part of Company A. of the 36th Regiment of Ohio. All the Companies were also sworn in on that day.

    Oscar Owen and other soldiers marched 115 miles from Parkersburg to a Camp in the wilderness of Virginia called 3 forks. There are 42 soldiers with Oscar Owen at 3 forks and there is about 500 men in another camp, Spencer which was 10 miles from 3 forks. Also on there way back from getting baggage they were attacked and one of their men were wounded. They cant normally catch anyone but they currently had 5 secessionists.

    Oscar was talking to his uncle about Battle Tactics. No matter what happens something is gonna get done whether is raining, Thundering, Hailing, Even snowing something is gonna get done. Their just gonna have to work though it. Especially on the battlefield.

    Civil War Medicine Oscar and many other soldier were sick in the camp. Even the people Oscar was wrighting to were sick. At the time there was a sickness going around. Luckily it wasnt lethal so nobody died but it made people weak so they couldn't do as much as they normally would.
  • Attacked by the Secesh

    Attacked by the Secesh
    Confederate vs. Union Soldier Oscar was with the 36th regiment when they were marching back to Sedalia, when the calvalry came across a regiment of Secesh. They were on their way to join Prices army. When the Calvalry charged the Secesh, the Secesh took cover in some brush but the calvalry got to close and the Secesh took cover to quickly to see how many of them there were. The Secesh fired three times killing two of the Calvalry and wounding one. He died the next day. The Secesh surrendered and there was 1 thousand of them.

    Drilling and Watch
    They go on watch in the morning and they had 3 posts. One is within sight of the camp another is 2 miles away from camp and another is 2 miles away from the camp. They Drill for multiple hours a day to were most soldier even have trouble with writing a letter, As Oscar Owen had trouble writing his family after drilling.

    About Eight in the morning we arrived at Rolstone. At about 11 Oscar arrived at a Lewises Tavern in Lowell The Tavern was where him and other soldiers stayed for the time being. His job was to help take care of the children, also to wash clothes and dishes for Ms.Barbar. Most of the other time he had to sow for her. The tavern stands along the bank of the Ohio river. It is a large tavern and the biggest hotel in the area.

    Medicine and disease during the Civil War At the moment everyone is healthy which is good because that means more people can do more work and can drill etc. During the civil war if someone got sick pretty much everyone got sick because everyone was so close together with regiments and infantry and everyone working all the time.

    Oscar Owen and his fellow soldier and commanders all began to March. They had to pull off their pants and shoes and wade in order to cross Greenbrier river. During the first few days of the march one of their men was killed but he was shot by one of their own because he was a calvalry man who thought he was a secesh. They had 6 or 7 Secesh prisoners

    Railroads during the civil warOscar Owen and his fellow troops were set up pretty close to the rebel forces. The rebels had been destroying bridges for trains and destroying train tracks, they were also destroying train cars. General Mclellan requested Oscar and his fellow soldiers after so many attacks. Eventually soldiers set up along side a train car and hid themselfs and their weapons so the rebels wouldnt see them. After rebel forces got close enough the soldier began to fire upon the rebels and they quickly reinforced.

    Oscar and his fellow soldiers nearly lost the battle but they fought back so that they live to see another day. The Officers of the rebels had their soldier beleiving that there were only 5000 of them. Which gave Oscar and his troops the advantage. After the battle many soldiers were payed off and like Oscar said "...our pockets were full of money...". After the rebels retreated Oscar and other soldier chased the rebels for 50 miles, then they stopped and returned to Corinth

    The 28th Regiment fell the day beore and the 8th regiment of Virginia left the coal river and the report was that half of the 36th was going down there. But the oder was disregarded becuase the 92 regiment was going down there. Oscar also got his furlough for money which is good because he can send it to Family and friends. His brother saved a few of the letters Oscar sent because their special and if Oscar died in battle that would be a good memoriam.

    Oscar and other soldiers would send money home from their pay because they want to save their money but want to help out others. Oscar always stated that they are able to use the money he sends if needed but he also sent it to his family so they could keep it if he got home. Many soldiers did this becuase without them their family couldn't really earn money so they sent their family money.

    Mant people including Oscar and sick but the doctor has been giving pills to help with the sickness spreading throughout the camp. Oscar is experiencing pain in his back bones, so he has to take medicine to help cure whatever the problem is. It was pretty bad because the doctor was having to deal with tons of patients. And if Oscar runs out of pills then it could be difficult to get them.

    Camp Life Oscar and multiple other regiments were near the rebels and it was only a matter of time before they would be spotted by the rebels. Practically all the citizens in the area are rebels. The weather wasn't to great when they were there because it was wet and raining everywhere.

    30 rounds of artillery cartridges got set off & burned 7 men badly one of them has died since the incedint. Oscar doesnt beleive they will survive because of the blast. Luckily not to many people were hurt. General Crook left Oscar's infantry for a higher command of calvalry.

    They are within 18 miles of Chattanooga where it is reported that 75000 rebs are. General Rose has a big array set up with his troops. General Burnside is on our left who is to cooperate with us in the coming battle our army is in good health & in high spirits.

    Oscar was charging the front lines against the rebels when he was hit in the shoulder with a projectile. The Projectile put him in a field hospital for the time being. The battle is taking its toll on many soldiers like Oscar who is eager to get back into the war. The battle never stopped it happened all day Sunday. The loss' aren't good, Colonel Jones was killed and the men were ordered to go left to cut their way through the rebels and supply aid.

    The field Hospital is well equipped and comforts Oscar since he is wounded and needs medical attention. Oscar and other wounded soldiers are feeling better than they did when they first arrived and Oscar is getting alog well. Oscar and other soldiers dont have that much knowledge of what is happeneing on the battlefield and in the battle. Oscar was amazed to see so many troops rally up and ready to fight before he was wounded in battle and hospital.

    Field Hospitals in the civil war Oscar and other soldiers from his same regiment are ready to go back to battle. Many people are recovering from there wounds and are about to begin to head back to there commanders to recieve orders. Oscar is worried about being detained before makes it to his commanders. He doesn't want to get detained so that he can make it to his commanders quicker.

    Drilling in the Civil War Oscar and his Regiment were being drilled by a colonel they think is one of the best because he drilled for 9 years. The Colonel has experience and knows what hes doing so they enjy his drilling. They must drill almost daily so that they always remember there combat strategies. Drilling helps everyone because its always practice for when something happenes and it teaches soldiers what to do in cirtain occations.

    About Harpers Ferry The Rebels and Union Soldiers were skirmishing for a little over a day. They dont know the strenght of the enemy. The Regiment charged the rebels and they got pushed back. After that the Union returned to its original position.
