Anna and T.J. get to the airport
Anna and T.J. get to the airport ready to start their flight from Chicago, Illinois to the Maldives not knowing that their flight would end in a crash. -
Quote
"Mick rubbed his chest again and took his left arm off the control yoke, stretching it out in front of him. I noticed his pained expression and the light sheen of sweat on his forehead" (Graves 9) -
Now water, only breadfruit and coconut
18 days after their plane crashed, T.J. and Anna have been living off of coconuts and breadfruit. -
Quote
"Last week T.J. had spotted two fins just outside the reef. We panicked and left the water, but as we watched they came all the way into the lagoon. Dolphins. We waded slowly into the water in they didn't swim away. Waiting patiently as we approached them." (Graves 65) -
T.J.'s 17th birthday
Anna and T.J. celebrate T.J.'s birthday on the island. -
Quote
"I adjusted the tension on the string and held the stick at different angles. It took a while before I could get the stick to spin fast enough, but once it did I got smoke in about 15 minutes, and flames pretty soon after that." (Graves 73) -
T.J. breaks his collarbone
T.J. falls out of a coconut tree trying to get a coconut for Anna.Anna has to take care of him and bath him for the next couple weeks.When he fully recovers he gets back to helping Anna. -

"I instantly knew something was wrong because he held his arm so close to his body and supported it with his other hand. His shoulder slumped downward." (Graves 79) -
Extreme drought
Their first drought started after December, 2001, and ended at the beginning of May, 2002. They struggled trying to get water and adapted to the sensation of always being thirsty. -
Quote
"We had been only island a little over a year when the plane flew over. I was gathering coconuts that afternoon and the roar of the engines, so loud and unexpected, startled me. I dropped everything and ran to the beach." (Graves 88) -
They start to build a house
Anna and T.J. start building a house using wood from an old shack they found on the other side of the island -
Quote
"I scrambled out of the water and watched as they surrounded T.J. protecting him while he swim toward the shore. When he joined me on the sand I threw my arms around him, sobbing." (Graves 143) -
Anna turns 33.
Anna turns 33, and in September of 2004, T.J. turned 20. They have been on the island just under 3 years. -
Quote
"In June of 2004, Anna and I had been on the island for three years. We hadn't seen any more planes since the one that had flown over 2 years before. I worried they would never find us, but I haven't given up completely." (Graves 169) -
Tsunami hits the island
On Christmas of 2004, T.J. and Anna were walking on the beach when they noticed that the lagoon looked empty and abnormally shallow. They looked farther out to sea and realized that a giant wave was coming for them and their island. -
Quote
"Seconds later the wave arrived ripped Anna's hand from my grasp. It swallowed her, and me, and the island. It swallowed everything." (Graves 176) -
Anna and T.J. are rescued by 2 different helicopters
They were both rescued at different times since they got separated by the tsunami. Anna and T.J. were at the hospital and were getting taken care of by Doctor Reynolds. -
Quote
"'We've been living on one of the islands ever since our pilot had a heart attack and crashed into the ocean.' T.J. said. 'Oh my God you're, them aren't? The ones who went down in the sea plane.' His eyes were wide. He took a deep breath and blew it out. 'Everyone thought you were dead.'" (Graves 188) -
Quote
"T.J. and I ran through the jet bridge holding hands. When we came out on the other side the crowd roared. The flash of hundreds of cameras blinded me, and I blinked, trying to focus." (Graves 212) -
Anna and T.J. make it back to Chicago 3 years later
They make it to Chicago 3 years after they had left for summer vacation. Anna is now 33 years old and T.J. is now 20 years old.
