"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth..." (Genesis 1:1a). Chapters 1-11 of Genesis survey the world before Abraham and the age of the patriarchs. They describe God as the creator of all creation include humanity: Adam and Eve. Chapters 3 describes "The Fall," the decision of Adam and Eve to disobey God's instructions with an act of willful rebellion, which results in terrible consequences for all of God's creation. This is the first recount of sin (ESV Study Bible).

The Lord calls Abram from his country to the land that God will show him and promises to him, "I will make you a great nation and I will bless you and make your name great so that you ill be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." (Genesis 12:2-3 ESV Study Bible)

God hears the cries of his people and calls Moses to lead his people out of slavery in Egypt and into the promised land. Moses is given the 10 commandments to guide the LORDs people. This marks the beginning of the Law. God's people are instructed to build the tabernacle where God can meet with Moses and they are lead through the dessert by God's glory and manifested presence. (Exodus)

Moses sent spies into the land of Canaan including Joshua and Caleb. The men came back with a report of fear and doubt, but Joshua and Caleb had faith. God's judgment came upon Israel for their fear and doubt and they had to wait another 40 years to enter the promised land led by Joshua. (Numbers 13-14)

The people of Israel cried out for a king to rule over them. Samuel appoints Saul as the first king of Israel. Saul disobeys God and God's anoints David to take his place. Saul's insecurity and the consequences of his disobedience drive him mad and he tries to kill David several times. After Saul's death in battle David takes his place, he is eventually succeeded by his son Solomon. (1 & 2 Samuel 1 Kings).

Israel becomes divided between a northern and southern kingdom, Israel and Judah which are ruled by Solomon's son Rehoboam and Jeroboam.

The king of Assyria captures Samaria scripture is clear that this is a result of Israel's sin against God. They turned to other gods and were disobedient and God. (2 Kings 17)

King Solomon finishes building the first temple. (1 Kings)

Babylon attacks Judah. The temple and palaces are destroyed and Jerusalem's treasures are varied of to a foreign land. (2 Kings 23-25 ESV Study Bible).

God raised up Ezra the priest and teacher and Nehemiah the leader and governor to reestablish his people and begin their renewal. Nehemiah leads the rebuilding of the all of Jerusalem and leads the people in a recommitment to God's covenant obligations (Ezra & Nehemiah ESV Study Bible).
