    trouble at sea
    they had met with many feirce storms, which shroudly shook the boat which made her upper works very leaky. one of the main beams on the ship was bowed and cracked. they used a "great iron screw" to fix the beam and set it into place. and they caulked the upper ddecks as well as they could. during one of the storms, a lusty young man named john howland was thrown into sea, but thank god at the last second he caught himself on the topsail halyards and saved his own life.

    many were dieing and by january and feburary, more than half of their company had died. "they were infected with scurvy and other diseases from their long voyage and inacommodate conditions". About 2-3 people died a day. all but about 50 died, and of those, 6-7 were still healthy and did everything they could in their power to help the others get better.

    At first the indians would watch the settlers from a distance and steal their tools while they were away doig something else. as one indian who knew how to speek english approached them, they spoke and this indian got the settlers to speak with Squanto who had all of their stolen tools returned to them and he made an agrement with the settlers consisting of a list of 6 different "rules" that they had to follow.

    They had now began to gather their small harvest that they had,and made their homes fit for winter, since everybody was recovered in good health and had all things in good plenty. they were employed in affairs abroad,others were exercised in fishing. They knew about fish in which they had plenty of and each family had their portion. By the and of summer as the winter approached they were doing great. wild turkeys were everywhere and they had lots of corn. they wrote home about how good they were
