Due to a civil war in Ethiopia, the Asgedom family left their country for a refugee Umsagata camp in Sudan.

Mawi's father taught him many life lessons. One of which is about treating those who appear to be beggars, vagrants and misfits as angels. For we never know who we are entertaining. pg29

Tewolde told night time stories. Funny and butt kicking stories or invincable ninjas. A healthy outlet for young boys trying to cope with a big new world.

Father strictly forbade Mawi and Tewolde from fighting, even if they were defending them selves.

The boys and thier friends found trouble. What seemed innocent and tempting, turned into a brush with the law.

The brothers encountered an angel outside of the library. Tewolde and Mawi gave their lunchs. This opened the door to kindness for the boys. They took it upon themselves to share. Tewolde went above and beyond for others just like this first angel.

Mawi learnt many things during his families coffee talks. Facts and events, they whys and hows. Through this information he was able to process and understand some of the questions he had about their lives in Africa.

Coach encouraged Mawi to join track. This began Mawi's track career, during which the coach mentored him.

Mawi was encouraged by his high school counselor to apply to as many colleges as possible. Even the best in the nation. Her simple and sincere encouragement gave Mawi the push he needed to apply.

He heard stories of his fathers adventures. These stories were new to Mawi and his brother, Hntsa. His father told of court rooms, flooding, an orphan and the needy.
