As the men sail onwards, they eventually come to Helios' island. At first, they agree easily to Odysseus' demand that they not eat the sacred cattle. Little by little, the resources that the men brought with them dwindle away into nothing. Finally, when Odysseus is asleep, they slaughter some of the catlle and eat them. Everyone of them died, except for Odysseus.

Odysseus finally reaches the land of the Phaiakians. While playing ball, Nausikaa runs into Odysseus.Nausikaa instructs odys as to how to act while approaching town and meeting her parents. Odysseus reaches Athena's grove and waits for Nausikaa to reach home. Athena pours fog around odys until he reaches and embraces the queen's knees. Odysseus asks the queen for help in returning home. Penelope would marry anyone of the suitors who could string Odysseus’ bow and shoot an arrow through twelve axe-handles joined together. Odysseus picked up the bow, stringing it with ease and in one fluid motion letting fly an arrow that pierced all the twelve axe-handles. After that, there was chaos. Revealing his true identity, Odysseus began massacring the suitors and, aided by Telemachus and the swineherd Eumaeus, they had soon cleared the court of all 108 of them.

In front of Odysseus, Penelope ordered the palace servants to remove the bed from her bed-chamber to the hall outside. On hearing this, Odysseus bristled with anger and opposed the idea, saying that this bed had been fashioned out of a living oak by his own hand. Joyful, Penelope rushed to Odysseus and hugged him, with big tears in her eyes, for she was reassured that this man was her beloved husband returned to her. Only Odysseus knew about the bed.
