Nullification Crisis

  • Tariff of Abominations

    This was a tariff that benefited the northern United States and it's manufacturing however, it caused economic hardship in the South. The effect of this was South Carolina threatening to succeed from the Union because Vice President John Calhoun argued that the state has the power to "decide the validity of federal legislation within the states borders."

  • Proclamation to the People of South Carolina

    This was a Proclamation given by Andrew Jackson to the people of South Carolina in response to South Carolina's Ordinance of Nullification. In this speech he addressed the dangers that South Carolina may face if they obey this illegal action. Andrew Jackson was willing to use force if necessary to protect the laws of the United States.
