Nullification Crisis

  • Tariff of Abominations

    The purpose of this tariff was to protect industries in the north and west from foreign competition. It placed taxes on foreign goods. The south hated this tariff because it raised the costs of living.
  • The Webster Hayne Debate

    Daniel Webster argued that the people had created the Union to promote the well-being of it as a whole, while Robert Hayne argued that the states had created the Union to promote their own interests.
  • South Carolina Ordinance of Nullification

    The state of South Carolina declared the tariffs of 1828 and 1832 null and void. South Carolina threatened to secede from the U.S. if the federal government were to enforce the tariffs.
  • Nullification Proclamation

    President Jackson issued a proclamation to the people of South Carolina that disputed a state’s right to nullify a federal law. This was in response to the Ordinance of Nullification from South Carolina.
  • Force Bill

    It was a law passed by Congress that allowed the President the power to use military force against any state that resisted the tariffs.
  • The Compromise Tariff

    Henry Clay and John Calhoun wrote the Compromise Tariff to resolve the Nullification Crisis. This tariff promised to lower tariff rates above 20% by one-tenth every two years
