  • Tariff of Abominations

    U.S. import tax on manufactured goods instituted to safeguard industrial and manufacturing centers in New England, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. This tariff was passed to protect the northern states' new industrial centers from competitions from the more established manufacturing centers in Europe. It ended up increasing prices on manufactured goods in the South.

  • Proclamation to the People of South Carolina

    President Andrew Jackson issued this proclamation as the answer to South Carolina's Ordinance of Nullification. He strongly opposed the nullification and would use force, if necessary, to carry out the laws of the U.S. The proclamation (1) declared that the duty imposed on him by the Constitution would be fulfilled to its full extent, and (2) to warn the citizens of South Carolina what they would face if they obeyed the Ordinance of Nullification.
