  • Tariff of Abomination

    John Q Adams enacted the tariff to protect the industry and agriculture in the west and the North. The Tariff raised on imported goods by 38%. The tariff also raised tax on 45% tax on specific raw materials.
  • South Carolina Exposition and Protest

    This is also called Calhoun's Exposition. It was written by John Calhoun to protest the Tariff
  • Ordinance of Nullification

    This was adopted by South Carolina to rule that the tariffs were null and void in the state. This is when they threatened to secede from the Union.
  • Jacksons thoughts

    Jackson disagreed that the state had the right to say that it is null and void. He says they Unity with the states is the most important thing. If South Carolina separate's from the federal government then the federal law was misguided, unconstitutional, and a for of treason.
  • Proclamation against the Nullifiers

    Jackson appealed to the State of South Carolina to reassert their Alliance with the United States because their ancestors fought for that right and they just can not give that up.
  • Force Act

    This gave the president the power to use the military to enforce the collection of import duties if a state refused to comply with federal tariffs.
  • The tariff of 1833/ Compromise Tariff

    This was written by Calhoun and Henry Clay, and it was a plan to gradually lower the import taxes over the next decade until it was was an average of 20%
