1895

Radio

Surprisingly as someone raised in 2000's I grew up listening to the radio for a long period of my childhood. My family was poorer when we got to this country. I remember always being excited to go home just to listen to them. Something cool is that interest in radio waves was originally only scientifically rather than for its potential for communication because of its multiple failures to be commercialized.

Sep 27, 1927

First television

The first television was created by Philo Farnsworth. It was a device integral for the easy dissemination of information. This was showcased in broadcast of moon landing in the U.S. An interesting thing is the device was created by a person who lived with electricity until the age of 15.

1972

Email begins

People relied on telephones for communication until Ray Tomlinson wrote the first software allowing for messages to be sent and received by ARPANET(Internet today). Today it is one of the most important forms of communication with more than 200 billion messages being sent a day. Interesting thing is that the idea wasn't initially viewed as important by Tomlinson or his superior's. Tomlinson himself is quoted saying he just considered it "a neat idea".

First cellphone

The first cellphone was made by Motorola in 1973 by Martin Cooper, weighing an impressive 2 1/2 pounds. It was a mobile telephone allowing calls to be made over radio links. It was important to the development of countries due to easier communication with others. Funny enough the first call ever was of the creator bragging to his rival Joel only to be met with silence. Joel to this day denies whether the call was real.

The birth of the internet

The internet's birth is considered to be 1983 because ARPANET hosts switched to TCP/IP. ARPANET was also known to be the testing ground for new applications and protocol such as, FTP(file transfer protocol), and NTP(network transfer protocol). It was important because it would become a place to find information by everyone in coming years.
