    Golden Age
    1300’s- Defined as the Golden Age, because Norway had increased trade and peace with British Islands and Germany. The King also made Norway became a state and have new laws as well as central administration and local representatives.

    Black Death

    Black Death
    1349- Black Death hit and ⅓ of the population died in one year, the next year 1,400 more people died from various other plagues. This is important because this although so many people died, a new way of agriculture began as well as government. Since so many people died and more land was available, the surviving people conjoined lands and raised more animals. Taxes were also lowered weakening the kings power, making the church more powerful soon creating the Council of the State.

    Norwegian and Danish throwns unite.

    Norwegian and Danish throwns unite.
    Olaf Haakonsson inherits the throne from the Hanseatic League, which established a powerful trade route in Bergen, with Norway; and gave them new pwer. Olaf also, when taking over the throne got control of Denmark. His ruling unites the countries and makes them allies.

    Margaret I, Takes the Throne

    Margaret I, Takes the Throne
    Margaret I, who already has control of Sweden, takes over from Olaf and now has control of three countries. She creates the Kalmar Union, which made Denmark, Sweden, and Norway all allies. Once the union was complete she started attacking Germany, in attempt to get more land. They did not win and now Norway had many high taxations and trade blockades, which caused them to start a rebellion against her, but the Counsil of Norway was to weak to make any changes.

    Denmark-Norway
    Sweden left the Kalmar union in 1523, while Norway and Denmark are too weak to pull free. Once Sweden is gone, Norway and Denmark have many forms of rebellion occur against the constant changing rule and government until 1600. Once it reaches the seventeenth century many wars break out between Denmark-Norway and Sweden, when the Sweden King tried taxing Norway, at first Denmark-Norway is winning but then they fall to Sweden; who takes control in ruling Denmark-Norway

    During this time period many wars were fought; while Norway slowly got it's independance. Many of the wars consisted of breaking free of Denmark, and trying to figure out a correct goverment and type of rule, as well as trading.

    Norway's Independance
    Since the 1800’s, after recovering from the wars and making an alliance with Sweden as well as breaking free of Denmark rule, Norway finally gets its independance. Their independence had started when they signed a new constitution and the Parliament of Norway in 1814. Now that they are independent they create a new government, and new social reforms, like sick pay and regulations for work. They also make the hydraulic energy industry bigger, so that their country and economy becomes stronger.

    In 1949, Norway became a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). This allowed them to make alliances with other countries and to have a mutual defense plan, so they could be helped out if they were ever attacked.

    Norway Becomes a Founder of EFTA
    In 1959 Norway helped found the European Free Trade Association, which became official on May 3rd 1960. This association helped countries with trade block since they couldn’t, or were not willing to join the European Economic Community.

    Oil Age
    In 1969 Phillips Petroleum Company found an oil patch in Ekofisk field, which is 200 miles southwest of Stavanger. Since 1969 and still today it is one of the most important oil fields in the North Sea. This is an important event because this allowed Norway to make more money, and have more jobs for people.
  • Female Rights

    Female Rights
    In 1884 the Norwegian Association for Women's Rights was created, it got destroyed in 1898 but did not stop the fight for female rights. For the next 100 years or so more rights were established, like majority status and being allowed to vote, not to mention being allowed to abort a baby and not having to do jail time because of it. By the 1990’s women had finally gotten all the same rights as men.
