    Jews in Germany are deprived of citisenship and other fundamental rights.The nazi intensify persecution of political dissidents and others considered dissidents and others considered "racially Inferior" including "Gypsies," Jehovah's Witnesses, and Homosexuals.

  • German troops annex

    German troops annex Austria. On Kristallnacht (the "Night of Broken Glass"), Nazi gangs Physically attack Jews throughout Germany and Austria.

  • Germany takes over

    Germany takes over a neighboring nation,Czechoslovakia.

  • Germany invades

    Germany invades poland

  • Deporting

    Nazis begin deporting German Jews to Poland.

  • Elie begins studying the Kabbalah

    Twelve-year-old Elie Wiesel begins studying the Kabbalah.

  • Nazi Germany attacks Soviet

    Nazi Germany attacks the Soviet Union. The British and the Soviets sign a Mutual Assistance agreement.

  • Nazis arrest Jewish leaders

    Nazis arrest Jewish leaders and close synagogues in Transylvania. Jews are quarantined. Nazis confiscate valuables and force transylvainian Jews to wear the yellow Star of David and ban them from restaurants, cafes, and public transportation.

  • Germany Occupies Hungary

    Germany occupies Hungary in March. Between late April and early July, around 440,000 Hungarian Jews are deported from Hungary, most of them to Auschwitz.

  • Elie is fifteen

    Elie Wiesel is fifteen years old when he and his family are deported by the Hungarian gendarmerie and the German SS and police from Sighet to Auschwitz. His mother and younger sister perish; his two older sisters survive.

  • Jews forced from homes

    All Sighet Jews are forced from their homes and told to line up in the street at 8 A.M. At 1 P.M., the first group departs by train.

  • evacuate Auschwitz

    SS units evacuate Auschwitz in January. Elie and his father are transferred to Buchenwald concentration camp, near Weimar Germany. Elie's father dies in January; Elie is liberated with the arrival of U.S. troops in April.
