Foreign Jews

Restrictions begin

First, "Jews were prohibited from leaving their residences for three days, under the penalty of death." Second, "a Jew was henceforth forbidden to own gold, jewlry, or any valuables." Third, "every Jew had to wear the yellow star." And finally the ghettos were created. At this time, Hitler took over Hungary and was continuously deporting more and more Jews. -
Birkenau
Birkenau The Jews in the ghettos were forced to walk and eventually loaded into a crowded wagon. They arrive first at their first concentration camp, Birkenau. At this camp the Jews are separated from each other, divided by gender and age. This is the last time he sees his mom and sisters. -
Auschwitz
Auschwitz Elie had stayed with his father and faced harsh treatment together. Soon they were deported to Auschwitz. Their first impression was that it was better than Birkenau. While they were here, they encountered a distant family member named Stein. Although Elie knew it wasn't true, he told Stein that his wife and kids were alive. -
Buna
<ahref='http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Holocaust/Buna.html' >Buna</a> They were forced to march to Buna next. Buna was a good camp and they got a good Kommando. At this camp they were required to have a medical checkup. The dentist noticed Elie's gold cap on his tooth and wanted it. Elie is whipped by Idek and meets a girl whom he runs into later in life. -
Gleiwitz
Gleiwitz The Jews are forced to run in the snow for a very long time. SS officers were ordered to shoot anyone who couldn't keep up with the pace. Elie and his father both reach Gleiwits but Elie's father becomes so ill that he can't leave his bed. -
Elie's Father's Death
Elie's Father's Death Elie's father dies during the night. His last words were Elie's name. Elie feels a sense of relief because he no longer has to be responsible for his father. Elie then feels guilty for feeling this way. -
Things Began To Change
Things Begin To Change The way things worked started to change. Rumors that Hitler had been defeated spread across the camps. Roll call didn't take place and all the Jews were ordered to the Appelplatz. Elie was told that they were going to exterminate all of the Jews so he wenk back to the barracks. However, the prisoners were evacuated instead of being shot. -
Left Buchenwald
<ahref='http://www.jewishgen.org/ForgottenCamps/Camps/BuchenwaldEng.html' >Left Buchenwald</a> The first American tank stood at the gates of Buchenwald. The Jews felt relief that the war was over and Hitler was defeated. On this day the Jews in Buchenwald were removed from the camp. Elie says that the prisoners didn't plan to seek revenge. -
Elie becomes ill
Liberation After liberation, Elie becomes very ill with some kind of poisoning. He's now 16 years old. The things he saw during the holocaust have changed him and he will never forget this horrifying event. For the first time in a long time, Elie looks at his reflection in the mirror but he doesn't like the person he has become.
