    In !960, Nigeria moved away from British rule to become more independent. This move legitimasizes there government. Thus begins the history of Nigerias politlcal tumult in the next years

    From this period because of the previous of the British empire, Nigerians believed that the parlimentary system would work for them, but that was not true, As you can see this system only lasted 10 years because of the wide divide in ethnicity
  • Olusegun Obasanjo detrones Tafa Balewa through a coup d' etat

    Tafawa Balewa is forced out of power through a Military coup. This then became a transition from a Paralimentary styled government to a military dicatorship.

    The Second Republic begins and Nigeria, has a democaractic regime for the most part.

  • Moshood Abiola wins presidential election;election get annulled

    All the militiary general who came a went promised that when the country became more stable they would transfer their power. that didnt happen when military general Babangida who annulled the election. Months later Babangida lost his power in a Military coup by Sani Abacha.
  • Abacha dies; Abdulsalami Abubakar takes over

    Abubakar, promised to do things right and step down. He creates a transition team. Held elections the following year in 1999.
  • Olusegun Obasanjo

    get properly sworn in as president, that people of spoken apparantly,but there are several rumors saying that there was voting fraud. either way Obasanjo lasted as president till 2007.

  • Northern States adopt Sharia Law

    Northern states decide that they want to follow Sharia law and defrenciate themselves from the Chrisitans. This created alot of tension and resulted in the death of many people.
  • Olusegun Obasanjo get re-elected

    first civilan run election since the military coups. he got elected for the second term with more than 60% of the vote. EU political obersevers said there were serious irregularties.
  • Umaru Yar'Adua becomes president

    Umaru Yar'Adua of the ruling People's Democratic Party wins the presidential election.
  • President Umaru Yar'Adua dies /Vice-president Goodluck Jonathan takesover

    President Umaru Yar'Adua dies after a long illness. Vice-president Goodluck Jonathan, already acting in Yar'Adua's stead, succeeds him.
