  • US Tried to Buy Land (Sidel and Polk)

    Slidell was sent to Mexico by President Polk to try and negotiate getting New Mexico and California. This planned failed because President Herrera (Mexico's president) refused to meet with Slidell after he pronounced a "traitor" by Mexican press.
  • US Troops Stationed at Disputed Border

    The US army under General Taylor marches towards the Rio Grande, pat land that was claimed by both the US and Mexico.

    US declares War
    After the approval of $10 million and 50,000 troops by congress, Polk declares war on Mexico.
  • US Victory at the Battle of Monterey

    US Victory at the Battle of Monterey
    General Taylor invades the city of Monterrey in a plan to cut off Northern Mexico. Taylor defeats General Pedro de Ampudia's army, and his success helps bring more US troops into the war.
