Paleo-Americans first inhabited Nicaragua. They mainly lived off of hunting and gathering, fishing, and slash-and-burn agriculture. They lived this way until they were disturbed by others coming into Nicaragua.

The first to try conquering Nicaragua was a conquistador who went by the name of Gil González Dávilla. The first permanent settlements of Nicaragua were in 1524, by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba.

In 1527, Arias Dávilla became the first Spanish governor of Nicaragua.

After being a part of the First Mexican Empire, and the United Provinces of Central America, Nicaragua became an independent republic in 1838.

Though the United States were a part of Nicaragua most of the time, the U.S. Marines truly occupied Nicaragua from 1912-1938, other than some time in 1925.

The Somoza family came into power through being a part of the Guardia Nacional replacing the U.S. Marines.
