    The Mayflower was going to leave on July 1620, but had to turn back because a ship they were traveling with leaked. The name of the ship was the Speedwell. The Mayflower eventually set sail on September 6,1620

    The Mayflower eventually set sail on September 6,1620. It was very hard. The "passengers" had to protect themselves from bad weather. They also had to eat salted beef,hard tack (dried biscuts), and dried vegetables UNTIL they were able to cook on deck.

    The pilgrims originally wanted to settle close to Jamestown,Virginia because the setlers in their had an established settlement for 13 years. Their was a litle change of plans though. A storm hit to send the ship off course. Then they landed in Cape Cod in Plymouth. They landed near a big rock that they called Plymouth rock.

    In the late 1620's the colonists started to govern themselves. They made a Meeting House to hsve meetings and go to church. They also made a document called the Mayflower Compact. It was a document made by colonists to show their laws and to show respect to the king.

    In the winter of 1620-1621 half of the colonists died off. They died from harsh weather, starvation, and diesease. It was very hard.

    After a while Samoset came to the colonists area. A miracle happened! He knew how to speak English! Samoset went back to his tribe and brought back Squanto. Squanto taught the colonists how to farm and find food. Squanto and Samosetcwere the colonists heroes.

    After Squanto and Samoset helped them the colonists started to get back on their feet. They now knew how to farm, find food, and had nice houses.

    The first Thanksgiving had NO FOOD! "Thanksgiving" was a term they used for prayer. They prayed a long time.

    After the praying the colonists started to PARTY! They danced a lot.

    The first turkey eating, cider drinking, and belly filling Thanksgiving happened 2 years after the prayer Thnksgiving. It happened to thank God for giving them rain after a 2 moth drought.
