The first treaty between the Oto Tribe and the US government
The Otoe agreed to give up some of their land in exchange for merchandise, and the US would pay them money for their land. -
Preemption Act of 1841 passed
People that worked in the federal area got land to farm and improve so they could claim it as their own. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act passed
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was the first territory that was allowed popular sovereignty which means that they got to pick whether they were going to be slave states, or not. -

The north and south were divided by slavery and fought a 4 year battle over if slavery would spread to the rest of the US or if it would end. -
Homestead Act passed
It allowed citizens that didn't work in the federal district the ability to buy land so they could have the same chance to get land as the people that worked in the federal area. -
The Charter for the Transcontinental Railroad passed
There was two companies that were battling each other by building the railroad. They didn't get paid in money, but instead they were paid in 10 miles of the railroad. The two companies were the Union Pacific, and the Central Pacific. The Union Pacific lost because they had to build over mountains while the Central Pacific didn't have to go over that many mountains, so they were able to cover the most land. -

The US government gave land for colleges to be built on like UNL. -

The Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroad were two companies who raced to build railroad. The more track that was laid, the more land they got 10 miles from the railroad. -
Plum Creek Massacre
The Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians attacked a freight wagon train killing 13 men and taking a woman and a 9 year old girl hostage. -
Sand Creek Massacre
The Indians rebelled against the Americans who wanted to take their land, and make reservations for them. The Indians also resisted American settlement. -
Nebraska becomes a State
There were enough people in the state because of the Homestead Act, so it was declared a state on March 1, 1867. -
The first Treaty of Fort Laramie
The US signed an agreement that said that they were allowing another tribe to be in the Sioux tribe reservation. -
The treaty in 1892 between the US government and the Lakota Tribe
It was supposed to bring peace between the settlers, and Lakota tribe.
