    First nations

    The Vikings were technically the first people to set foot in north america but they didnt live here so we're cncentrating on Indians. The first natives first came here around 30 000 years ago. Algonkians are nomad and patriarchy and the iroquois are semi-nomad and matriarchy.

    Ways of life: Iroquois.

    The iroquois were matriarch which means the women lead the group. They lived in longhouses which worked to their advantage. They practiced agriculture and fished for their food. Since they were sedintary they would know where each other were so when it came to war, the iroquois were always victorious.

    Way of the life: Algonquiens

    The algonquiens were very nomadic, they followed the animals wherever they went and lived in small groups. Instead of longhouses they lived in teepees. They hunted for their food, no agriculture. They were much more primitiv compared to the iroquois nations. During the winter there would be 10-15 people in a group. They were patriarchy which means the men lead the groups.

    Living in peace

    Before the europeans came to America the two nations lived in relative peace. When the europeans arrived the two nations started fighting ( One trading with the french and the other with the english)

    Populations and inventions

    The iroquois and the algonquiens had many ways of getting the job done:
    - They used birchbark Canoes as transportation
    - they practiced agriculture
    - They used tomahawks as weapons.
    - They did gorrilla warfare which took the europeans by suprise
    - The algoquiens lived in small groups so they could fead eachother better while the iroquois lived in large groups in longhouses.
  • The fur trade

    When the europeans arrived it dirastically changed the way of life for the amerinians. They started to trade with the europeans and traded for guns, and tools. The fur trade was the center of the economy of the french so they took advantage of that by trading with them. They could take advantage of them because they knew the lay of the land.
