  • The Children's Aid Society of New York

    The organization opened its first Industrial school and initiated the first free school lunch program in the United States.
  • Philadelphia: 1894 Events

    The Starr Center Association served penny lunches in one school in Philadelphia and then expanded the service to other schools. A lunch committee was established and lunches were served in nine schools throughout the city.
  • "Poverty" by Robert Hunter

    Hunter influenced strong influential ideas to help the U.S. effort to feed hungry children in schools. He wrote the novel "Poverty'' that demonstrated his ideas on how poverty effected children at the time.
  • Milwalkeee: 1904

    The Women's School Alliance of Wisconsin began serving lunches to children in three centers located in areas of high need.
  • Boston: 1908-1910

    Women's Educational and Industrial Union began serving hot lunches to high schools and created a lunch advisory committee. In 1910 the program was extended to elementary schools and students educational performance improved.
  • Great Depression

    Federal government set up a program with the USDA to sell food at a lower price to poor families in the school lunch program.
  • Operating Lunchrooms

    15 states authorized school boards to operate lunch rooms with 4 states offering assistance to low income families.
  • National School Lunch Program

    Enacted in 1946 this program serves nutritionally balanced, low cost, or free lunches to 31 million children each day.
  • National School Lunch Act ammended

    Financial assistance was given to schools with a high percentages of low income children.
  • School Food Service Foundation

    Established as a non-profit entity focusing on research and professional development for school meals.
  • The Child Nutrition Act of 1966

    The Act initiated a school breakfast program in response to the war on poverty.

    Created a Special Foods Service Program that created a year round food program for day care and a summer feeding plan for low income children.

    Led to the expansion of child nutrition programs and enacted the free and reduced price school lunch programs for low income students.

    1979:Establishes the category '' foods of minimal nutrition value" that cannot be sold in cafeteria during meal times
  • National School Breakfast Week

    Created to raise awareness about the benefits of children having breakfast at school.
  • National Food Service Management

    A self- assessment tool titled Keys to Excellence: Standards of Practice for Nutrition Integrity was designed to assist schools in improving there nutrition programs.
  • Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act

    President Obama initiated the act to update school meals and foods sold outside the school meal program.
  • NSLP goes into effect

    Standards are based on the Institute of Medicine recommendations adding more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and removing trans fat.

    Implemented to improve the quality of foods and beverages sold through vending, school stores, a la cart, and fundraisers.
