  • Napoleon invades Italy

    Napoleon ws chosen to lead French troops into Italy. The French defeated the Austrians, who ruled Italy at the time. France aquired Belgium from Austria. France also aquired hundreds of art treasures from Italy, which were placed in the Louvre, the Frnch National Meuseum.
  • Egypt

    Napolean sailed to Egypt, where the British forces were stationed. He won a great land victory there , but the British destroyed the French fleet. Soldiers accompanying Napolean discovered the Rosetta Stone. Austria, Russia, and Great Britian defeated French forces in Europe. When Nepolean found out about this he left his troops in Egypt and returned to Paris. There he and two members of the Directory plotted to take over the goverment.
  • The Consulate

    Napolean set up a new type of goverment called the Consulate. He placed himself at its head and took the title of First Consul. Russia was no longer in a war with france.
  • Austria

    Napolean led French forces to victory over Austria.
  • Peace Treaty with Great Britian

    He arranged a peace treaty with Great Britian.
  • First Consul and emperor

    Napolean brought peace and order, he was very popular. He asked the people to elect him First Consul for life. They elected him in a plebiscite. The French made him emperor of France. The coronation was held in Notre Dame Cathedral. The Pope came down from Rome for the crowning. Napoleon took the crown from the Pope and placed it on his own head.
  • Britian declares war on France

    Britian, threatened by Napolean's actions declared war on france. Great Britian and its allies were not able to stop Napolean and his soldiers.
  • Napolean crowned himself king of italy

  • Confederation of the Rhine

    Napolean formed the Confederation of the Rhine, which consisted of a group of conquered German states.
  • Invaded Spain and Portugal

  • Paple States, Pope in prison

    Napolean made the Papal States part of France and put the Pope in prison. France's boundaries now included much of Europe.
  • Great Britian

    Only Great Britian and Russia were unconquered. The French could not defeat the British navy, Napolean tried to obtain victory in a different way. He forbade the countries in his empire to trade with Great Britian, which he called a "nation of shopkeepers" the order was unsucessful.
  • Invaded Russia

    Napolean organized a Grand Army of about 600,000 men of different nationalities. It was the largest army the world had yet seen. The Grand Army invaded Russia. Except for one battle, the Russians did not fight. they retreated drawing the FRench deeper into Russia. As they retreated they burned everything to leave nothing for the French. The tactic is called a scorched-earth policy.
  • French Freeze

    Napolean finally retreated but by then the Russian winter had started, hundreds of thousand soldiers died from freezing to death. thousands more died from diesiese and lack of food. fewer than 100,000 soldiers survived.
  • Moscow

    Soon after the French arrived the city caught fire and three fourths of the city was burned down. the french army didnt have food or shelter. Napolean sent several peace proposals which Russia ignored.
  • Allies join together

    Napolean quickly drew up another army but it was not well trained. They were defeated by the allied forces of Austria, Prussia, Russia and Grat Britian. This was the first time that the four countries had joined together to fight Napolean.
  • Allies take Paris

    The allies took Paris, and Napolean was forced to give up the throne. he was sent into exile to the small island of Elbe off the coast of Italy. He managed to escape, and gathered together enough troops to invade France. For 100 days Napolean again reigned as Emperor.
  • Waterloo

    THe allies under British leadership of the Duke of Wellington, finally defeated him in 1815 at the battle of Waterloo. this time Napolean was sent to the Island of St. Helena off the West Coast of Africa.
  • Death

    Napolean died on the island of St. Helena in 1821.
