It is important because this is when the father and Tim run into the cow-boys and father goes missing. Also, because this is when Tim becomes a man(hypothetically speaking). -

It is important because he had been dead for a month, he had been sent to a prison ship in New York. Also, he died of cholera. It is important also because this is what helps the family come together more. Jerry Sanford also died. -
Sam comes back from war
It is important because Sam has grown weaker and thinner over the years because of the war. Also, he is staying there for winter encapment and almost all the troops are starving and they are stealing cattle just to feed themselves. -
