    Sam arrives home from the battle of Lexington and Concord, Father and Sam disagree on what side they should be on. Sam runs off with the Brown Bess and joins the Continental Army.

    Tim can't decide which side, Patriot or Loyalist, he is on. When Tim talks to Sam he feels like a Patriot and when he talks to Father he feels like a Loyalist.

    Continental soldiers come to take Father's Brown Bess, but Sam already had it. The soldiers continue to harass Father so Tim runs up to Tom Warrup's home and find Sam and the Brown Bess. Tim takes the Brown Bess and Sam runs after him, leading Sam right back to his home. When he sees Father, he runs away,

    Mr. Heron talks to Tim about delivering messages for him. Father does not want Tim to do this because the letter might get Tim into trouble with the British or the Patriots.

    Tim tries to deliver the letter anyway by telling Father he is going fishing. Betsy Read stops Tim claiming that the letter might get Sam arrested and hung by the British. Betsy takes the letter and then realizes it was just a test for Tim.

    Father and Tim go to Verplancks Point to trade cattle in order to get supplies for the tavern. Father and Tim are stopped by cow-boys on the way to Verplancks Point but are rescued by Loyalist horsemen.
