The Purchase of Alaska
Everybody thought at first that the purchase of Alaska was a stupide idea because there were nothing there. William Seward tried to persuading the House of Representives to buy Alaska to approve the treaty. In the end they did. Why this was important was because in 1959 Alaska became a state and USA got rich in timber, minerals and oil which is a good thing to have. -

The Overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani
American business groups overthrow Queen Lili and took control over Hawaii because Queen Liliwanted to remove the property-owning qualifications for voting. The american business groups didn't like this so hey took control over Hawaii. This was important because it made USA able to get sugar and later on Hawaii became a state. -
U.S.S. Maine Explodes
The USS Maine was an american ship that was rsponsible for bringing American citizen back home form Cuba. It blew up, for unknown reseaons, in the harbor of Havana. This was important because it made USA furious at Spain becuase they fought it was them. USA got so mad that they fought Spain and freed Cuba from the control of Spain. -
Theodore Roosevelt becomes president
Theodore Roosevelt became president nad he changed a ot of things that is important back then and today. Some of the things he did was taking on big industry, monopolies, trusts and robber barons, fighting for the little guy and creating the "Square Deal" and he created the National Park system. The Platt Amendment
The Platt Amendment was an amendment that USA made for Cuba which basically said that USA had control over Cuba. It was important because USA wanted Cuba and now they kind of had control over them and there was nothing they could do about it. -
Upton Sinclair "The Jungle"
The Jungle was a book by Upton Sinclair that was about the human condition in the stockyard in Chicago but what shocked the readers was the condition of the meatpacking industry. I think this was important bacuse it made everybody think about how the food was and so less poeple got sick of the food. -
Pure Food and Drug Act
The Act made the government check the food and drugs to see if they were allright and not bad. This was important because before the salesmen could just say that it was tip top and not bad at all and then you eat/drink it and get really sick and maybe die. Now the government checked it and everybody "trusted" the government. -
The Assination of Franz Ferdinand
Franz Ferdinand was the Archduke of Ausria-Hungary but he got assasinated by the black hand. This was important becasue it pretty much began WW1. -
The Panama Canal
The Panama canal is an canal through Panama and it made it easier for ships to trnasport their good. It was created by Theodore Roosevelt. It was important because it the shiping faster so USA could get food/ammo/biulding parts for trains, cars and ships, quicker. -
Trench Warfare
Trench Warfare was a battleground of many yards where to amries fought from each side. I think this is important because it has changes the ways we fight wars in modren times. Now we have missiles that we can fire from hundreds og miles distance, so we dont need to send soldiers out and risk their life. -
The Selective Service Act
The Selective Servise Act required men to register in the military. It was important because that way USA had more men to fight on the front and to support the Allies. -
The Food Administration
The Food Administration was where USA made it unable for people to buy certain food different days so they could send food to the army. I think this was important because it gave more food to the soldiers out on the field so they wouldn't starve -
The Sedition act
The sedetion act made it illigal for the people to say something bad about the government otherwise you would be thrown in jail. This was important because it violated the freedom of speech and it made everybody scared of the government. -
19th Amendment
The 19th amendment gave the right for women to vote. This was important because now the women had a choice to vote and have more control over whos gonna be our presdent
