Multimedia Development Process Assignment

  • Choosing songs to combine

    Choosing songs to combine
Firstly the orchestra and ThePianoGuys must decide which selections they would like to intermix in order to create the affect that they were hoping for. It sounded like they came into this project with a gist of what they wanted, but I'm sure it took a few weeks to decide which motifs. Secrets originally written by Ryan Tedder, published by SONY/ATV TUNES LLC Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Opus 67 written by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1804-1808 and debuted in Vienna's Theater an der Wien in 1808
  • Period: to

    Idea Element

I approximate the Idea Element to take about a month. I figure in this time they will begin throwing around ideas for songs, locations, and titles.
  • Search for copyrights

    Search for copyrights
They must begin requesting copyrights to the song to be able to adapt them into their song since it will be recorded and performed publicly.
  • Choosing Locations for filming

    Choosing Locations for filming
Secondly, they must search for appropriate locations to film the music video at. I have seen these same locations in other videos that were prior to this one, so while I'm sure they certainly did location hunting, I assume they already had a good idea about these areas. They maybe spent up to a week considering locations Filming locations:The Mountains of St. George UtahAmerican Heritage SchoolTPG StudiosMetCom Studio (Behind the Scenes footage)
  • Choosing a title for the song

Part of the brainstorming would be compiling a list of appropriate titles for the song combination. They decided on Beethoven's 5 secrets. This would be because they used 5 of Beethoven's motifs and added them into the popular song, Secrets.
  • Period: to

    Script Element

I approximate the Script Element to take about 3 weeks to complete. I consider this to be arranging the song, deciding on an opening quote, and deciding which instruments will play what parts.
  • Arrange and compose the song

Now that they have decided on which songs they would like to use and have the appropriate copyrights to use them they must officially put the song together. Composing an original song could take months, but since this group had a fair idea of exactly what they wanted ahead of time I'm guessing it took only a few weeks at most to arrange the song. (Arrangement written and produced by Al van der Beek & Steven Sharp Nelson)
  • Which Instruments

When they are toward the end of composing they will be able to decide who they want playing which part and on which instrument. I'm sure they know each other's playing quite well and it only took a couple days to decide who should play what. Additional violin work by Julie Ann Nelson (Steven's wife!) & Matthew John Nelson (Steven's brother!)Steven Sharp Nelson: Acoustic cello, electric cellos, percussion, vocal texturesAl van der Beek: Vocal textures, percussion
  • Find a beginning quote

    Find a beginning quote
Because this particular group believes so entirely that music quotes can inspire young musicians, I'm sure they took a day or two at least to consider the quote that they would begin this production with.
  • Period: to

    Storyboard Element

I imagine that the Storyboard Element will take about two weeks. This is where they right out the storyboard and begin preparing how they would set up the individuals and orchestra, they would also decide what they want for filming.
  • Begin writing a storyboard for the video

Now that they have a full song and ideas of where they would like to be and who will be playing what they must set up a rough storyboard of how the video will turn out so that they can prepare for the other questions they must ask within this phase. Here they must combine all ideas from both Steve and Al, as well as those of the Lyceum Orchestra. I would imagine that this takes approximately two weeks to figure out.
  • Set up

    Set up
They must now decide how they would like the orchestra and individuals set up before filming begins. This way the orchestra and individuals will be prepared on what to expect before recording begins. Also, as some of this video requires filming outdoors they must decide what type of weather they will be awaiting for filming so that they can be prepared to film on a day that meets their standards. I think this will take a day or two to figure out, and will again involve cooperation.
  • Prepare for filming

Now that they understand what they want from the orchestra and the individuals to fit into the storyboard they must figure out what type of filming they will use for each section to acheive the wanted affect. I think that this would take a few days to accomplish

    Record Element

I estimate recording to take about two weeks. One week to record audio, and the next week to record video.
  • Begin recording

If I were doing this project, I would first record the music in a studio. This they would have to do several times for the acoustic cello, the electric cello, as well as the orchestra. I would imagine that recording just the sound aspect would take approximately a week. Orchestra recorded at MetCom Studios All other instruments recorded by Al van der Beek at TPG Studios
  • Begin recording video

After they have the sound they must begin recording the video aspect of it. Again, they must record several different times because of all of the different aspects they have going on. Orchestra recorded at MetCom Studios All other instruments recorded by Al van der Beek at TPG Studios
  • Period: to

    Edit Element

The editing I imagine to take a little over a week to put everything together.
  • Begin editing

    Begin editing
Now that they have both the sound and video they must begin putting the two together and editing the video and sound to produce the wanted affect. I imagine this could take anywhere from one-two weeks to do. Mixed and Mastered by Al van der Beek at TPG Studio
  • Period: to

    Finish Element

  • Finish and produce video

    Finish and produce video
To the finished videoI'm not entirely sure what finishing all entails, but I would imagine that is finalizing and getting it approved by all of those involved. I would guess this could take about a week Video produced by Paul Anderson & Tel Stewart
