The prophet Muhammad was born in the year 570 in Mecca, Arabia, present day Saudi Arabia. He was the first and only son of Abd Allah Ibn Al-Muttalib and Amina Bint Wahb. His father, Abd Allah died before Muhammad was born, and he was left with his mother to raise. When he was six, he was orphaned. He was raised by his uncle, Abu Talib.

Muhammad began working as a merchant. Tending sheep, buying and selling goods in Mecca (Early Islam). He would go to a mountain outside Mecca, and meditate in a cave called Hira. He kept doing that until he was 40. One day, during the month of Ramadan, angel Gabriel came down to him and asked him to recite the first lines of chapter 96 of the Quran (The Islamic Empire).

Threatened by the growing popularity of his message, the elites in Mecca persecuted Muhammad and his followers. This continued over more than a decade. Eventually, in 622, he was forced to move out of Mecca. In a journey known to Muslims as the Hijra, Muhammad and 70 other families fled Mecca to go live in Yathrib.
