The Monroe Doctrine was a document passed by President James Monroe in 1823. It stated that American will not get involved with any international affairs and that any type of intervention by Europeans in the region was a threat to the safety to Americans. It was passed because America was scared that Spain would take back their territories in South America, which was recently Independent.
