    As the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was being passed, the National Association for Retarded Citizens (NARC) worked to help litigate and ensure a fair judicial process was carried out. The advocacy group consisted of 23 individual groups that came together to form a strong alliance.

    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

    This allowed individuals with disabilities to be protected from discrimination under the law. This legislation includes Free and appropriate public education (FAPE) and Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).     Handicapped Children’s Protection Act

    The Act was signed into effect for President Ronald Regan. The act provided payment for the legal fees for those who successfully sure under the act. The act also provided guardians of children with special needs to have more input in the development of their child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

    Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

    The ADA was established in order to ensure that individuals with special needs are protected under the same rights as those without disabilities. This right applies both at school, work, and in everyday society, such as when riding the bus.

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act involves 6 pillars: FAPE, LRE, IEP, evaluation, parent/student participation, and all procedural safeguards for participants.

    This law states that all students should be proficient in math and reading. To monitor this, students were to be tested in grades 3-8 and in high school.
