Lotus eaters summary

Odysseus and his men where on the lotus eaters island. On the island lotus flowers that had the power to put you under a trance and cause you to loose focus. His men began to eat them and lose focus , motivation, and hope on trying to get back home. When Odysseus realized what was happening he had to gather them and get back on the ship to go back to Ithaca

Cyclops summary

1250 BCE

After Odysseus and his men encountered the lotus flowers they encountered the cyclops named Polyphemus, his men wanted to just take a few sheep and leave , but Odysseus wanted to see the cyclops, Odysseus and a few of his men went into the cyclops cave and got it drunk so it could fall asleep. After that they stabbed the cyclops in the eye making him blind , and Odysseus tricked it by saying his name was nohbdy.

Cyclops analysis

This event shows important characteristics about Odysseus for a short example he’s smart and very curious and anxious and reckless , selfish , and full of himself. But he risked his men because he wanted to see a cyclops. also he decided himself to tell Polyphemus his name which can lead to danger his men. In this situation he lose the possible safety of his men when the curse was casted. We also learn that Odysseus men trusted him a lot even though he puts their lives in danger

Polyphemus let them out unknowingly when he went outside to tend to it’s animals. As they were leaving Odysseus got cocky and told Polyphemus his name and they are louts because they are very lazy

Lotus eaters analysis

This shows a lot about Odysseus motivation to get back to Ithaca.
It also shows that his men needed Odysseus to survive. From this experience Odysseus loose precious time that could have been used on trying to get home. He gained not a lot of knowledge about creatures that he exposed and that he does not like

Helios summary

Helios had cattle that no one was allowed to touch , let alone eat or kill the cattle. One day Odysseus feel asleep , and eurylochus persuaded the men to eat the cattle of the sun. Odysseus woke up to find his men had broken their oath and killed the cattle . Helios asked Zeus and the other gods to punish Odysseus crew to for killing the cattle.

Sirens

The sirens were dangerous creatures that could lure in Odysseus and his men with their enchanting sound. Circe warned Odysseus that they would encounter the sirens, and that it was very close. To listen to the sounds and prove how mighty and brave he was, Odysseus had his men tie him to the flagpole to show he could listen to the sounds. This story shows how much Odysseus values his pride and how much he wants to be right and more capable

This particular story depicts the relationship Odysseus had with his men, and the reasons he had to do this so they will not get hurt he wanted to make sure that his men was okay.

Scylla and Charybdis

Scylla and Charybdis were the next obstacle that Odysseus and his crew faced. Odysseus was warned that he would have to go past Scylla and lose 6 men or Charybdis, who would create a whirlpool and destroy all of the ships. Odysseus chose to give up the 6 men, but he didn’t tell his crew . This particular story depicts the relationship Odysseus had with his men, and the reasons he had to do this.

Aeolus and the bag of winds

The bag of winds was a gift from Aeolus to Odysseus, as well as a wind guide he and his men to where they needed to get.
However the bag of winds contained 2 deadly storms.
Odysseus crew didn’t believe him when they were told this , and as they believed it was actually gold and silver. When Odysseus was sleep. The opened the bag and released the storms. This shows that Odysseus men didn’t trust him , by they were also selfish and greedy. The men disbelief caused them trouble.

Aeolus bag of winds analysis

Odysseus losts a lot of time due to his men stupidity because they did open a bag of wind and lost time, Odysseus gained knowledge to not trusts his men who tried to steak from him because if it was actually gold they they would have took it , also they just caused a bad storm which made their home farther away , the location helps develops the themes themselves because Odysseus men made their journey a lot more stronger than it had to be

Circe summary

1220 BCE

Odysseus and his crew travels aeaea, home of the beautiful witch goddess Circe. Circe drug some of Odysseus men and turned them into pigs, one of Odysseus men ran back to the ship and begs him to leave but Odysseus object and went back to go and get his men who turned into pigs. Hermes approaches him and give Odysseus a herb called moly to protect him from Circe. Odysseus later become Circe lover and lives with her for a year , Odysseus later continues his journey to Ithaca with his men

Circe analysis

Odysseus lost time during his time in aeaea when he was with Circe. Also Odysseus gained help from Circe with her direction for him to go to Ithaca, Odysseus also gained help and guidelines for him to bypass Circe and for him to get home. Odysseus crew was not smart when they was being tricked by Circe and they just waisted time being pigs

Odysseus role in effect in the Trojan war gave him the sense of knowing that he can accomplish big things and is powerful. He also gained respect and honor from the people of Greece. That’s good but also makes him reckless and that out other people in danger. From the experience Odysseus had nothing to lose but it could and did start to effect his character in behavior negatively
