    Prevention of unionization efforts
    Since the exploration of large-scale textile production started in the south during the 1880's a blend of paternalism and coercion prevented unionization efforts in the south.
  • South Carolina child labor laws

    South Carolina child labor laws
    The child labor laws were passed in South Carolina between January-Febuary in 1911. These laws have been very important in history. Once these laws were passed young children didn't have to work the heavy machinery in factories or work out in the fields.
  • White worker attacked by two black men

    White worker attacked by two black men
    One night in Blacksburg, South Carolina Joe Childers, a mill worker, met up with two black men. Little did he know that those two men would force him to down a pint of whiskey. When Childers couldn't comply the two men sexually assaulted him. The men were later jailed but while in jail someone hung the two men in a nearby blacksmith shop.
    This is one of the more gruesome events in the history of Blacksburg.
  • State superviser makes his annual report

    State superviser, George D.Brown, made his annual report.He stated that in exchange for the mill schools becoming part of the public school system he would help train the students for citizenship.
  • Night schools

    5,013 students enrolled in night school. Two hundred and fifteen teachers were employed to help teach the students. The people who controlled the school board encountered a problem with the fact that so many students were uneducated.
  • Pellagra Incident

    Pellagra Incident
    In 1916 researchers started exploring the relation of multiple factors to a Pellagra incidence in certain textile-mill communities in South Carolina. The study was sparsley continued through 1917 and 1918. By the end of the first year, researchers had determined that poverty had a close association with Pellagra.
  • School Survey

    In a southern mill town of about 2500 inhabitants, researchers took a survey on 591 students from grades two to seven. The researchers realized that 509 of the students were below normal intelligence. Two years later the researchers went to another town, far removed from the first, and gave the same survey to the students there. The results were so similar that it seemed as though the scientists had encountered a specialized social problem.

    Governor sends armed forces to mill village
    Some of the mill workers in Ware Shoals, South Carolina had a problem with working with African American labor union members so they created a strike union. A week into the strike the governor appointed a meditation board to look into the strikes. Even after the matter was resolved the governor sent armed forces to diminish any lasting thoughts of rebellion.

    Man shot during strike
    A man was shot and killed by a night watchman during a two month strike in an Arcadia mill village. The people in Arcadia encountered a lot of negative reprecussions because of this event.
  • Sheriff shoots unarmed demonstrators

    Sheriff shoots unarmed demonstrators
    During a peaceful protest by mill workers in Horea South Carolina 7 people were shot and killed by the town sheriff and his men.
    This event made the mill workers realize that there is a danger to protesting.
