  • Mexico gains Independence

    The War of Independence was costly for Mexico. The country was left devastated and impoverished.
  • Iturbide is crowned emperor

    He ruled the country for less than a year. He was removed from power by General Antonio López de Santa Anna and was exiled to England.
  • Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna assumes presidency

    Over the next 20 years, he would declare himself president 10 more times.
  • Texas declares its independence from Mexico

  • Texas becomes part of the US

    The United States admits Texas into the union.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo is signed

    Santa Anna signs the treaty selling more than half of Mexican territory to the US for $15 million dollars. Santa Anna was then forced into exile by the government established after the war.
  • A new Constitution

    It established a Federal Republic, just as the Liberals wanted.
  • Benito Juarez becomes president

    Benito Juárez, a Zapotec Indian from Oaxaca, became president.
  • War of Reform

    A 3-year civil war called the War of Reform broke out between the Liberals and the Conservatives.
  • Frane Invades Mexico

    Mexico owes money to the French, so they come to claim it.
