A 70 man US patrol being commanded by Seth Thorton was sent into the contested area north of the Rio Grande. There his patrol was attacked by a 2,000 man Mexican cavalry. 11 American soldiers were killed by the cavalry.

On May 3, 1846 the attack on Fort Texas had begun. Fort Texas was attacked by a Mexican artilery at Matamoros. Fort Texas started shooting back and they had a 160 hour bombardment which expanded while Mexican troops surrounded the fort.

The US Congress approved the declaration of war after a few hours of a debate. The southern Democrats were in strong support, while 67 Whigs voted against it.

Taylor's army was outnumbered 15,000 to 5,000 but the firepower they had helped them defeat Santa Anna's troops and made them retreat south.

On March 28, 1847 an important Mexican port of Veracruz was catured by American forces after a two week siege.

Scott's army was outnumbered 12,000 to 8,500 but yet they beat Santa Anna's army at Cerro Gordo which made a clear math to Mexico City.

Scott occupies Puebla and is sooned joined by Nicholas trist who is a diplomat sent by Polk to try and make peace with Mexico.

Trist met up with Mexican negotiators to talk about making peace between Mexico and the US. Santa Anna only offered Minor things that were unsatisfacory to the US so the war went on.

Trist met with Mexican Negotiators again to settle on a peace agreement. The US will pay $15 million for California, and New Mexico. they will also keep the border of Texas at the Rio Grande.

After the Negotiators signed the Treaty it was rushed over to Washington.

On March 10, 1948 the Treaty is ratified by the US Senate and is sent back to Mexico.

On May 25, 1848 the treaty made it back to Mexico and was signed by the Mexican Congress and the war was over.
