Metis Collective Rights

  • Period: to

    Manitoba Act

    The event of the Red River Resistance led by the Metis in 1869 to 1870 was the cause to the Manitoba Act. This act allowed Metis people to own land. Protestant and Catholic children were allowed to go to school, and the area of Manitoba was declared bilingual.
    ++
    This was a positive influence to the Metis because they were granted benefits by the parliament through this Act. They were given more than 500 000 hectares of land, not including the farms that they already owned.
  • Period: to

    SCRIPS

    Metis were given a choice between choosing a scrip or to become a "Treaty Indian". The scrips were used to trade for land. The government geve the Metis scrips instead of land as an instrument to try and rid the Metis of their Aboriginall sides. I considered this negative because the Metis were viewed b the government a little lesser than they do to Aboriginal people. The government did not think that the Metis deserved land like the First Nations did.
  • Northwest Resistance

    Thi event happened around spring time of 1885. Because more and more settlers are moving into western Canada, the Northwest Resistance was started to protect Metis lands. To the government, they were planning to overthrow Canada's authority. I feel that this is negative because the Metis were trying to protect the land they own while more settler are taking space that should have been owned by the Metis. The way the government views the Metis also doesnt help.
  • Period: to

    St. Paul des Metis

    Metis were allowed to establish farms because of the Catholic Church in an area called St. Paul des Metis. I think that this s negative because since more of the Metis lands are being taken by settlers, they are forced back, and they have no say about it.
  • Metis Population Betterment Act

    For the first time in the history of Canada, the goverment gave the Metis land under the Metis Population Betterment Act.
    ++
    This is a very positive change because the government of Canada had finally given the Metis something they deserve. It shows that the government had seen the Metis as a part of Canada (no matter how "less superior" they are) and were given something to show that they belong more or less as the First Nations does.
  • Period: to

    Taking Backof the Metis Population Betterment Act

    The lands were not under the Metis control anyways, so it was later taken back by the government.
    +-
    This is both negative and positive.
    It is negative because the lands that were taken back by the government, overlooking the Metis needs. It was also not as negative as it seemed, seeing that the lands were useless for daily living anyways. The Metis grew strong enough to live on that type of land, so they were able to survive without it, which is a good thing.
  • Part of the Constitution

    Since the Metis are part of the Aboriginal people in Canada, they were included in a part of a section of the constitution.
    ++
    This is a positive situation that have given the Metis a place in this country. This event led to the Metis having the same rules as everyone in Canada that time. Somehow, it also protected them.
  • Permanent Land

    The Metis were finally allowed their own land. They were also granted the right to bear part in developing the area they are given.
    ++
    This is positive because it showed the Metis they are now allowed to do a whole new range of things. By being part of the develop ment of the resources, they were offered jobs that could strengthen their society.
  • Rights

    The Metis were given the right to hunt and fish.
    +-
    This was positive because it showed that the Metis were allowed to do what they need to survive. This is also negative because it CAN mean that in the span of 13 years, starting from 1990, the Metis were not allowed to find food for themselves.
  • Rules

    The Government placed a rule that the Metis are not allowed to hunt without liscenses.
    +-
    This is neither positive or negative because two sides of the argument clashes here. A group says that the Metis do not need liscences because hunting and fishing is part of who they are, and thus it must not be restricted. Anothergroup says that they should have liscences of their own, because everyone else in Canada that goes hunting and fishing has one. It's fair that way.
  • Manitoba Act II

    In Manitoba, the Metis launched a case for the lands they should have rightfully recieved years before during the Manitoba Act.
    +-
    The result is unclear to me yet, but this is neither a positive or negative effect on the Metis. Whatever it could be, I don't think that it will make much of a change because the Metis have already had a lot of land.
  • NOW

    Overall, I think that the event on 1990 was the one that had the most effect on the Metis because after all the suffering that the Metis had on the course of the years, the rights, lands and possesions they need were given to them, as I typed on the timelines before this. Their hard efforts of lobbying and bringingup a case to make thei qualitty of life were daring, and it shows now, that they are what they are because of what they have earned for themselves.
