Medical Advancements of The 21st Century

  • Robotic Surgery

    Robotic Surgery
In 2000 the Da Vinci Surgery System was the first robotic system that was approved by the FDA. It gives the surgeon a clear view of the area that needs surgery using a less invasive approach that is controlled from a console. It affects medicine by reducing medical mistakes made by surgeons during surgeries and complete more complex surgeries with more precise work and control.
  • Public AED's

    Public AED's
The modern day AED we see today was invented James Jude, William Kouwenhoven, and Guy Knickerbocker. It was not until 2002 individuals began to be trained on how to use them. These AED's were also known as Defibrillators. These AED's sends a shock to the heart to restore normal rhythm. It affected medicine because now these devices are out in the public and can help anyone in undergoing cardiac arrest. It reduced the death of cardiac arrest by 7 to 10 percent.
  • HIV Cocktail

    HIV Cocktail
David Da-I Ho created the first HIV cocktail. This HIV cocktail was known as the Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy. This cocktail lessens viral loads (amouont of HIV in the body of the victim), and increases amounts of CD4 cells (cells destroyed by HIV). It affected medicine by making life expectancies for HIV victims closer to the expected life expectancy of a normal person.
  • Anti-Smoking Laws

    Anti-Smoking Laws
Nazi Germany started the first anti-tobacco/smoking campaign in modern history. It wasn’t until July 24th 2003 the Clean Indoor Air Act passed by New York to prohibit smoking in all work places. This affects medicine by helping to keeping indoor air clean. Also erases the chance of lung cancer from second hand smoke.
  • Hepatitis C Cure

    Hepatitis C Cure
Michael Sofia discovered the drug called sofosbuvir (Sovaldi) in 2007. It was first used on humans in 2010 but was also used in a clinical trail in 2013 to see if it could help Tom Limes, a victim of Hepatitis C. The drug enters the body and targets NS5B, a substance that is needed for Hepatitis C to replicate and destroys the ability for the virus to replicate. It affects us by making a deadly disease curable.
  • Eye Writer Technology

    Eye Writer Technology
In 2009 Mike Ebeling created the Eye Writer System. This system allowed immobilized people to draw and write with their eyes. It improved medicine by giving the chance of communication and art to people who are left immobilized by diseases.
  • Molecular Breast Imaging

    Molecular Breast Imaging
Michael K O’Connor created The Molecular Breast Imaging technology in 2010. This machine is a test that uses a gamma camera to detect breast cancer. It affects modern day medicine by providing a better test to find and detect breast cancer in women. Gives a more clear image.
  • Gene Editing

    Gene Editing
Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuel Charpentier created CRISPR in 2012. This system does programmable editing of a human's geneomes. It affected medicine by creating a way to edit and change someone’s DNA. It made it possible to remove certain things and edit what makes up a person.
  • Artificial Pancreas

    Artificial Pancreas
In 2013 Dana Lewis created the first artificial pancreas. This was called the Artificial Device System. It helps patients suffering from diabetes. It acts much like a real pancreas would. When a patients blood sugar is low, it will give insulin into the body. When it is too high, it delivers carefully measured amounts of insulin. It will deliver insulin until the body is at a normal rate of insulin. This affects us by helping diabetes patients always have control of their diabetes.
  • Immunotherapy for Cancer Treatment

    Immunotherapy for Cancer Treatment
William B. Coley is known as the Father of Immunotherapy, but it was not until October 27th, 2015 that it came out to help treat Lung cancer. Opdivo was the first immunotherapy agent approved. Opdivo is a type of cancer treatment that gives a boost to the body’s actual defense that fights cancer And used to restore immune system function. It affects medicine by making it possible to have another treatment for cancer.
