McMinamin Supranationalism and Devolution

    Britain/United States
    The splitting of The British Empire into Britain and the U.S. is an example of Devolution. This example of devolution was caused due to economic reasons. The colonies of Britain wanted independence from Britain and began to go to war with them. Britain didn't have enough money to hold on to them as colonies and eventually let them become independent.
  • Triple Entente

    Triple Entente
    In 1907, Britain, France, and Russia all formed together to create the Triple Entente. This supranational organization was formed so they would not attack each other and so they would prevent Germany from taking over. This organization is a political/military organization.
  • U.K./Ireland

    U.K./Ireland
    The splitting of the British Empire into the U.K. and Ireland is an example of devolution. This example of devolution was caused due to cultural reasons. The people living on Ireland were Catholics and were being ruled by Protestant leaders from Britain and the Irish people wanted to become an independent country. Britain allowed Ireland to become independent because of this issue, but Northern Ireland became part of the U.K. because of the Protestant majority living there.

    The United Nations formed on 1942 to fight against the axis powers. When the WW2 was over, the U.N. began to prevent a WW3 from occuring. This supranational organization is a political/ military organization and includes France, Britain, Germany, and U.S.
  • Warsaw Pact

    The Warsaw Pact is a supranationalist organization between the Soviet Union, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania.This is an example of a political/military organization . It was formed in a response to the creation of NATO which seemed as a threat to them.
  • OPEC

    OPEC
    OPEC is a supranational and formed for economic reasons. OPEC includes 13 oil producing countries including Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Indonesia, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela. They formed so they could regulate the global price of oil and so one of them doesn't undercut another.
  • PLO

    The PLO is a cultural supranational organization and includes the Palestinians form West Bank, Gaza Strip, and Golan Heights. They formed because they wanted independence from Israel
  • Quebec/Canada

    Quebec/Canada
    Another example of devolution occurs between Canada and Quebec. This was caused due to cultural issues. Quebec wants to gain independence from Canada because of their French majority and because of their Catholic majority. Canada decides to grant them autonomy, but not independence
  • U.K./Scotland

    One example of devolution occurs between the U.K. and Scotland. Scotland realizes it can function on its own as an independent country due to their large oil supply in the North Sea and can join the E.U. as an independent coutry and recieve more resourses. England decides to grant Scotland autonomy but not independence because Scotland needs England for protection and England needs them too.

    An example of devolution occurs beteween Serbia and Montenegro(former Yugoslavia). This was caused due to political/military causes. Yugoslavia had become the 2 countries of Serbia and Montenegro in 2006. Yugoslavia had one through a series of conflicts and fighting and eventually split into 2 countries
