Ho Chi Minh created this group in order to try to gain independence from the French Empire. On September 4, 1945 Ho claimed Vietnam's independence, but France denied this statement and the Viet Minh began guerilla warfare to gain their independence. -

Mr. Kennedy sends 400 Special Forces troops and 100 other military forces/advisors to South Vietnam. For which they would be training South Vietnamese agents under the training of the CIA and special forces sent. -

When President Kennedy was assassinated Lyndon B Johnson his vice president got sworn into office in his place. -
Vietnamese torpedos were shot at the U.S.S Maddox on August 2nd in the Gulf of Tonkin and as a result the U.S ship fired back. They reported the attack to the president and wanted to see what they should do if anything because of these attacks. -
The navy ship U.S.S Maddox reported a second attack back to the President and this second "attack" is what prompted the very first attack on North Vietnam. -
President Johnson got this power after a 98-2 vote in the Senate and unanimous in the House, with these congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. This gave him powers to call orders that would protect the armed forces. -
This attack on North Vietnam was called Rolling Thunder after gaining power from the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. -
This battle was the first major battle that the U.S was in; fighting the North Vietnamese Army.
