Jun 16, 1961 Vietnam U.S. president Kennedy and South Vietnam's president, Diem met and U.S. agreed to move the number of U.S. advisers in Vietnam from 340 to 805. Dec 11, 1961 Vietnam The first American helicopter lands in Vietnam. Jul 23, 1962 Vietnam Loas Agreement was signed. It was signed by the U.S. and the Soviet Union and ended the civil war in Laos. Jul 24, 1962 Vietnam U.S forces were ordered to fire first because North Vietnamese shot down two U.S. helicopters that were ferrying South Vietnamese troops. Jun 11, 1963 Vietnam An old Buddhist man set himself on fire to show how serious the protest was against Diemgovernment's policy. Aug 21, 1963 Vietnam South Vietnamese attack Buddhist temples under control of Diem. Kennedy denounces the attacks. Nov 2, 1963 Vietnam South Vietnam's president Diem was killed in a military coup. The United States approved of it because they thought it would strengthen the oppostion with th Viet Kong. Feb 6, 1964 Vietnam Viet Kong troops cross border and capture three camps. They leave after a 14 hour crossfire and lose one hundred men, the South only losses four. Aug 2, 1964 Vietnam An American ship or Maddox is attacked by North Vietnamese ships on Aug.2, and it has been in the water since July 28 Aug 6, 1964 Vietnam After the Maddox was attcked, the president ordered an arial attack on North Vietnam. The planes in the attack were F-8 Crusaders, and A-4 Skyhawks and Skyraiders. Jan 2, 1965 Vietnam South Vietnamese troops are slaughtered and five Ameriacans are killed in a battle in the Village of Binh Gia. Feb 7, 1965 Vietnam A U.S. Airforce base is attacked with explosives by the North Vietnamese, and 8 Americans died and 126 are wounded. The president orders 49 jets to attack North Vietnam Mar 8, 1965 Vietnam 35,00 U.S. troops land in Da Nang airbase. They weaken security there so the South Vietnamese troops can do other tasks. Apr 4, 1965 Vietnam As U.S. planes bomb the roads of Hanoi, Vietnamese MIGS attack American planes. This lasts for three days. Apr 10, 1965 Vietnam More U.S troops are dropped off at Da Nang TO help out. May 26, 1965 Vietnam 47,424 Austrailian troops come to help out North Vietnam in the war. Only 494 troops are killed. Soon the are helpeed out by troops from New Zealand. Jun 5, 1965 Vietnam U.S. troops attack and are officially announced as "in combat". Jul 12, 1965 Vietnam Leutenant Frank Reasoner was the first man to recieve the Medal of Honor after being ambushed with his group and killed. Jul 25, 1965 Vietnam The president announces the arrival of new forces from 7,000 to 125,000 with the arrival of 4,000 paratroopers from the 101st airborne. Oct 10, 1965 Vietnam U.S. 1st Calvary division helps out South Vietnamese troops in an attack on the enimies in the Highlands. It lasted four days. Dec 24, 1965 Vietnam Bombing halts as to try to make peace with North Vietnam. They refuse and President Johnson announces that the bombing will resume. Mar 9, 1966 Vietnam U.S. base wiped out as North Vietnamese attack at camp outside of Shau. 12 of 17 Ameriscans were saved and 172 of 400 South Vietnam soldiers were saved when U.S. helicopters came to save them. Apr 12, 1966 Vietnam U.S. sends its first B-52 raid on North Vietnam and they fire a missile counterattack killing 7 American soldiers. Jun 29, 1966 Vietnam U.S. planes bomb fuel facilities around Hanoi. These were the first buildings destroyed in this area. Sep 12, 1966 Vietnam Five hundred U.S. planes bomb North Vietnam, and marking it as the heaviest bomb raid in the whole war. Apr 20, 1967 Vietnam U.S. planes bomb North Vietnam city Haiphong. 86 planes took part in the bombing. Jul 29, 1967 Vietnam A fire starts on the ship the Forrestall, killing 134 crewmen and injuring 64. Mar 16, 1968 Vietnam U.S. troops were ordered to enter a village firing and came in a slaughtered 200-500 civilians. Dec 31, 1969 Vietnam The president has started to pull troops out of Vietnam. By the end of this, with 479,000 troops in Vietnam, 9,414 troops died.
