    Network between Harvard, MIT, and BBN (the company that created the "interface" message processor" computers used to connect to the network) in 1970 was created.
  • Email was first developed

    Email was first developed
    Developed by Ray Tomlinson, who also made the decision to use the "@" symbol to separate the user name from the computer name (which later on became the domain name)
  • The beginning of the TCP/IP

    A proposal was published to link Arpa-like networks together into a so-called "inter-network" which would have no central control and would work around a transmission control protocol (which eventually became TCP/IP)

    MUD - The earliest form of multiplayer games was debuted
    The precursor to World of Warcraft and Second Life was developed in 1979, and was called MUD (short for MultiUser Dungeon). MUDs were entirely text-based virtual worlds, combining elements of role-playing games, interactive, fiction, and online chat.

    The first emoticon was used. While many people credit Kevin MacKenzie with the invention of the emoticon in 1979, it was Scott Fahlman in 1982 who proposed using :-) after a joke, rather than the original -) proposed by MacKenzie.

    The first Domain Name Servers (DNS) was created. The domain name system was important in that it made addresses on the Internet more human-friendly compared to its numerical IP address counterparts. DNS servers allowed Internet users to type in an easy-to-remember domain name and then converted it to the IP address automatically.
  • World Wide Web protocols finished

    The code for the World Wide Web was written by Tim Berners-Lee, based on his proposal from the year before, along with the standards for HTML, HTTP, and URLs.

    Brought some major innovations to the world of the Internet. The first web page was created and, much like the first email explained what email was, its purpose was to explain what the World Wide Web was.

    The webcam was developed in 1991 and pointed at the Trojan Room coffee pot in the Cambridge University Computer Science Department to show when a fresh batch of coffee was brewed. Source

    The first-ever photographic image posted on the internet was a picture of the Les Horribles Cernettes or "The Horrible CERN Girls" (in English). It was taken and uploaded by Tim Berners-Lee and his colleagues. The group was an all female parody pop group founded by the employees of CERN. Source

    One of the first known online purchases takes place. It was an order for a large pepperoni and mushroom pizza - with extra cheese - from Pizza Hut's "electronic storefront," PizzaNet. Source

    In 1995 the worlds first dating service, www.Match.com, was created and changed the way people dated. It was initially very simple and only matched people based on profiles of likes and dislikes but now dating sites have evolved and are much more complicated. Source

    Google Search is developed by Google
    Google Search is the most-used search engine on the World Wide Web and handles more than 3 billion searches every day. It was originally developed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1997 and provides several features beyond just searching for words. Source
  • Facebook is created

    Facebook is created
    Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. Originally, the founders limited the websites membership to Harvard students but later expanded it to higher education institutions in the Boston area, the Ivy League schools, and Stanford University. Facebook has now added support for students and anyone of age 13 and older. Source

    Youtube was created
    Youtube was founded in February 2005 by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim as a place to watch and share original videos worldwide through the internet. Google bought it in 2006 for 1.65 billion dollars. Source

    Twitter is created
    Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass and launched in July 2006. It is an online social networking service that enables users to send and read short 140-character messages called "tweets". Source
  • Instagram is created

    Instagram is created
    Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and launched in october 2010 as a free mobile app. It is an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing, and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos and share them either publicly or privately on the app. It was bought by Facebook in April 2012 for around 1 billion dollars in cash and stock.     Kik Interactive was founded in 2009 by a group of students from the University in Waterloo in Canada who wished to create new technologies for use on mobile smartphones. Source
