    The Northwest Territory was the first organized territory of the US. It is the most important legislation that congress has passed with regard to American public domain lands. The Northwest Ordinance prohibited slavery. This gave the US territory rights northwest of the Ohio River.

    France gianed Louisiana from Spain. US needed access to New Orleans. The US bought Louisiana from France for $15 million and it doubled the size of the US.

    People wanted to settle west to get wealthy off of the land and crops they would grow. They wanted to escape slavery and racism. They also wanted to spread democracy through the West. People stopped there lives and sold everything to seek gold in CA.
