Malysh

  • Coordinate actions of both hands

At 12 months, Malysh was throwing some paper that he was able to reach at the desk, and at the same time holding a paper cup in a different hand . This development is fine motor development (p. 182).
  • First word "papa"

Malysh just said his first word "pa-pa-pa" . He is only four and half months old. My wife and I were very exited, and even through he doesn't know the meaning of this word, his babbling made me and my wife very happy.
According to the textbook, it is a normal time for infants to start babbling. The usual range is between four and ten months old (p. 156).
  • Teething pain

At 6 months old Malysh has his first tooth come in and he began crying all day. Teething happens when kids' teeth grow in through their gums and cause pain and discomfort. This usually starts between 5 and 9 months old. The usual symptoms of teething are saliva production, drooling, more coughing, and perhaps a rash around the mouth (p. 130).
  • Walk without support

At 13 months, Malysh walks standing on his own and climbs everywhere. He loves to walk behind the cat, and tries to catch his tail. At this stage, gross motor skills use muscles including the arms and legs. This shows a stage of gross motor development (p. 182).
  • Explorer

At 17 months old, Malysh started to examine the environment around him with more details. This behavior matches with Jean Piaget's proposed fifth stage of sensorimotor development, tertiary circular reactions, in which the toddlers will consciously try different things with what's around them to see what the consequences will be (p. 187).
  • Categorization

At 18 months old, Malysh has been able to sort his toys in categories like size or color. Categorization is a stage in infant development described by Piaget when is mentally able to place an object or image in a single category while being able to add onto it and recall the information for later use (p. 189).
  • Toilet trained

At 24 month old, Malysh showed key signs of toilet training, as he stayed “dry” for a long time. Usually, toddlers show readiness to have toilet training between 18 and 30 months (p. 184).
  • Separation with my wife

My wife and I decided to separate. Our kids got very upset. Lyalya, which is our younger kid, look like she took this news easear. Malysh blames himself for the separation. My wife and I decided to sign an arrangement. According to this arrangement, my wife will retain custody, and I will have visitations. According to the textbook usually, the divorce process usually hurts relationships between mother and male children the most, and boys blame themselves for the divorcep (p. 318)
  • Malysh got many male friends

After picking up Malysh from school, I observed that he stays usually around boys of his age only. After asking the names of his friends, I realized that his friends in his group are boys only.According to the textbook, this behavior is called selective association. Selective association is a social principle that people tend to prefer being around others who are like themselves (p. 319)
  • First time drunk

At 16 years old, Malysh went to a party with some friends. After he called me to come pick him up after midnight. The next day he had head pain after drinking alcohol. The consequences of underage alcohol drinking can be fatal car crashes, physical fights, and other bad things. It was a good thing that he called me instead of driving drunk (p. 413).
