    Black Enlist into Armies
    Blacks joined the northern and southern armies to help free their brother. There were entirely black regiments, the first to go into combat was the 54th Massachusetts.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    • declared “forever free” the slaves in those confederate ares still in the rebellion
    • it did not free any slaves immediately changes the war aim from keeping the union together to now ending slavery
    • helps to influence britain’s decision to stay out of the war
    • removed any chance of a negotiates settlement with the south
    • blacks in the north flocked to join the army to help free their brothers
  • West Virginia Joins the Union

    West Virginia Joins the Union
    • had a separate social and economic life than the rest of the state
    • broke away from virginia and became a union state
    • puts a union state in the middle of the south
  • Gettysburg Adress

    Gettysburg Adress
    -ceremony to dedicate a cemetery; lincoln gave a two minute speech
    -expressed liberty, justice, freedom, equality
    -showed what the north was truly fighting for
  • Lincoln’s Assassination

    Lincoln’s Assassination
    • lincoln goes to ford’s theatre to watch “our american cousin”
    • pro southern actor- john wilkes booth shot lincoln in the head at ford theater
    • booth killed 12 days later
    • south cheered at first over lincoln’s death but then realized their treatment would have been better with lincoln
    • andrew johnson became president
  • Reconstruction Act of 1867

    Reconstruction Act of 1867
    • divided the south into five military districts
    • said that states that wished to be administered had to pass the 14th amendment
    • passed the 15th amendment
  • Jim Crow Laws

    Jim Crow Laws
    • segregated the south
    • created separate black and white everything: schools, restrooms, drinking fountains, etc.
