    nited States Maj. Robert Anderson and his force of 85 soldiers were positioned at Fort Moultrie near the mouth of Charleston Harbor on December 20, 1860. Confederate batteries opened fire on Fort Sumter and continued for 34 hours due to the Union soldiers unwilling to surrender Fort Sumter.

    The Battle was fought in Virginia just miles away from Washington D.C., when the majority of citizens led President Lincoln to push Brigadier General Irvin McDowell, commander of the Union army in Northern Virginia, to attack the Confederate forces commanded by Brigadier General P.G.T. Beauregard. The goal of this battle was for the Union army to open the way to Richmond and end the war.
