    The Union gained control of the Mississippi river, it split the confederate side into two, and boosted Ulysses S. Grant's reputation, allowing later for him to become General-In-Chief. The siege of Vicksburg was a time in which the Union army surrounded the city of Vicksburg, allowing no supply's or reinforcements to come to the trapped confederate army. Then, on July 4, Pemberton was forced to surrender.

    This battle was a turning point of the war. After this, the South won't win any more major battles and the Europeans definately won't come to help the Confederacy. George Meade led the Union army while Lee and Longstreet were Confederate officers. George Pickett led his men into slaughter on the third day in what is known as Pickett's Charge.
