First attempt of Great Britain to occupy the islands. Spain made a protest before which the British responded that their navigators had discovered them in the sixteenth century. Spain replied that the islands were adjacent to the American continent and that also their navigators visited them in the same century, so the occupation was paralyzed. -

The French founded a colony in the east, leaving a lead plaque claiming sovereignty. -
