    Chapter 1-2

  • The Crash (Ryan)

    The Crash (Ryan)
The initial incident. The boys have just been involved in a plane crash in which their plane was shot down and landed on a small island. The rest of the plane was dragged out to sea with any remaining kids or adults, leaving them on this island alone. With the boys left scattered all around the island. Piggy reassures this with, "I saw the other part of the plane. There were flames coming out of it." (Golding:1,2) Showing that there was a crash and he is fully aware of it.
  • The Conch (Ryan)

    The Conch (Ryan)
    – Piggy and Ralph have not seen any other kids at this point in the novel and they are looking for a way to get them together. This is when the find the conch. Piggy originally recognizes it because his grandmother had one. This is used to call together all of the kids but is also later sued as a ‘talking stick’ kind of thing amongst the boys. The conch symbolizes power and authority, the last of what is left from the crash. "We can use this" (Golding:1, 10)
  • The Leader (Ryan)

    The Leader (Ryan)
Once Jack reaches the beach with his ‘military style’ run choir, he immediately has the presence of a forceful leader. This contrasts with Jack in the debate of who will lead, in which he thinks he should "because [he’s] chapter chorister and head boy. [He] can sing C sharp" (Golding: 1, 18) . Ralph is then voted in by most of the boy but he gives Jack the order of his choir. This immediately creates a sense of tensions and strict distinction between their demeanors and will only grow wiht time.
  • The Boulder (Ryan)

    The Boulder (Ryan)
When Ralph, Jack, and Simon all go together to see if this land mass that they are on is actually an island, they come across a land boulder apart from the rock. They all come together and push it over, accomplishing nothing but doing it out of their own purpose, simply a reckless and useless gesture that seems to bring them joy. Their feeling towards this are shown as “Not or five minutes could they drag themselves away from this triumph. But they left at last." (Golding: 1,20)
  • The Pig (Ryan)

    The Pig (Ryan)
When Simon, Ralph and Jack are coming back to the camp after adventuring through the island, they come across a pig tangles in creepers. Jack sees this and immediately claims he will kill it, but hesitates allowing the pig to get free. This shows his weakness, how he claims how strong he is yet he is still too civilized to kill the pig and the kids “They knew very well why he hadn't: because of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh" (Golding: 1, 22)
  • The Beastie (Ryan)

    The Beastie (Ryan)
During one of the meetings a kid with a mulberry birthmark states that he saw a figure lurking, "A snake-thing. Ever so big. He saw it."( Golding: 2,3). This strikes fear into all of the other boys and creates a lot of tension in the night.
  • A Metting Is Called (Ryan)

    A Metting Is Called (Ryan)
At the start of this chapter, Ralph calls an another assembly to give jobs and duties to the rest of the group. This involves food, shelter, fire and more. This all gets the boys excited initially but proves to be worthless after most of them get sidetracked after five minutes. Ralph tries to justify these rules by letting them know "[They’ve] got to have rules and obey them. After all, [they’re] not savages.“ (Golding: 2, 192). Along with this the conch is chosen as a ‘talking stick.'
  • Piggy: The fire and Conch (Ryan)

Piggy: The fire and Conch (Ryan)
when Piggy’s glasses re used to light the fire, and once it goes out Piggy criticizes the problem with it. This creates and argument between Piggy and Jack which leaves with Jack questioning the integrity of the conch, not following the rules of it even though the rules are for the entire island. “Oh shut up!” “I got the conch,” said Piggy, in a hurt voice. I got a right to speak,”(Golding: 2, 44), shows the tension of rules and outlaw kind of situation between Jack and Piggy.
  • Forest Set on Fire (Ryan)

    Forest Set on Fire (Ryan)

  • Missing Mulberry Child (Ryan)

    Missing Mulberry Child (Ryan)
Once the fire seems to have gone out, the boys notice that the boy with the Mulberry mark is not with them and Piggy knew because “That little ’un that had a mark on his face–where is–he now?
